came across a drone shot on Instagram and knew right away that I
wanted to shoot the surf from above. After purchasing my fi rst drone,
I’d fl y three times a day for hours! As I gained confi dence I’d get lower
each time; I love the feeling that you're on the same wave as the surfer.
My drone defi nitely gets very salty, so I change the blades often, use baby
wipes to clean it and give it a good spray with compressed air to clear out any
sand. It’s super-easy to get your hands on a drone these days. The brand I
use is DJI, and I have the Mavic Pro 2 – with the combo kit and some extras,
it’s probably going to set you back $2.5-3k. From toy stores to professional
drones, the range is probably $30-$15,000 – maybe even more for some of
the bigger professional drones.
I’ve spent many hours tweaking my editing and learning new techniques –
there’s always something more to learn. It’s crazy how technology just keeps
getting better, and the best part is that it’s just going to keep evolving. I’m so
excited to see where photography ends up going.
