S

kai, what got you into surfing at such a
young age?
Both my parents surf as well as my brother, who
is two years older than me. My Dad would take
me into the ocean when I was two. We did tandem on a
foam board for a couple years and then he started pushing
me into tiny waves when I was 4 or 5 years old.

Where do you surf mainly and how many times do
you surf a week?
My main spot is Haleiwa – it’s like five minutes away
from my house. I surf around five times a week. I go to
a Japanese School on Saturdays so I miss some time in
the water then.I surf early before school and after school
sometimes, as my school is directly across from Ehukai
Beach Park (Pipeline).

Do you enter contests and if so how’s that been
going?
I just surf in a few local contests a year. I’ve had some
success in them and won a few cool prizes. They are
always super fun and you get see all of your friends.

What size boards are in your quiver?
4’5” to 5’1” – I have a couple boards that are my own but I
mainly ride my brother’s old boards.

Which surfer would you most like to surf like?
Coco Ho for her style and grace, and Carissa Moore for
her power.

Would you like to be a pro surfer when you grow up?
If I can, I will try it.
