Pearls have always been a fashion classic,
embedded as they are into the DNA of Chanel:
stitched onto dresses, as buttons on cardigans
and layered around the most glamorous necks
like nautical ropes. But this season it’s not just
Coco who’s loco for pearls: catwalks are awash
with the precious gems. Rustic baroque beads
were big for spring, elevating the hippy beach
look, but have been refined and polished for
the new collections. They adorn Maison Michel
hats, shine on Mother of Pearl shoes and
bedeck dresses at Alexander McQueen and
David Koma. Go all-out with an Eighties
Balmain jacket, or, for those who merely want
a pearly flourish, opt for a piece of modernist
jewellery from Magda Butrym or Miu Miu,
where the ‘Girl With A Pearl Earring’ is reborn.
