It’s 50 years since the Queen’s eldest son was
invested as Prince of Wales – and, right on cue,
the menswear collections are paying homage to
the heir to the throne’s strongest looks. Chief
among them is Glen plaid (more commonly
known as Prince of Wales check), which was
seen on the catwalks at Balmain, Giorgio
Armani and Celine, updated for 2019. Charles’
polo-playing Seventies sports looks are also
making a comeback, reincarnated as Dolce &
Gabbana and Kent & Curwen’s colour-blocked
jerseys. Also celebrating a milestone anniversary
this year is Daks, which marked its 125th year
with the creation of a special check inspired by
the façade of its old Piccadilly shop. Meanwhile,
breakout Scottish designer Charles Jeffrey is
riding the Prince of Wales-inspired tartan wave,
with a bold and bright mash-up of his personal
family tartans, which appears on tailoring and
accessories and has been added to the official
Scottish tartan register. Keep your style in check
this season and all hail the future king.
