lord of

the jungle

T

he jungles of Madhya Pradesh, India,
thrum with the echoes of endless
wildlife. From elegant chital deer to
mammoth gharial crocodiles and flocks of
vibrant birds, there are breathtaking sights at
every turn here – but none are more memorable
than a glimpse of the majestic Royal Bengal
tiger. Madhya Pradesh is home to more than
20 per cent of India’s tiger population, with six
dedicated tiger reserves – alongside 24 wildlife
sanctuaries and 11 national parks – covering an
area of more than 10,000 square kilometres.
Bandhavgarh is the location to punt for if
you’re keen for a sighting of the jungle’s biggest

cat. Its National Park has the highest density of
Royal Bengal tigers of anywhere in the world
and it was here that Sir David Attenborough
shot the tiger episode of the recent epic series,
Dynasties. Another must-see is Pench National
Park, the location that inspired Rudyard
Kipling’s The Jungle Book. The third of Madhya
Pradesh’s trio of best-known parks, Kanha
National Park is respected globally for saving
the Barasingha (a species of deer found nowhere
else) from near extinction.
Those lured to this unforgettable destination
can expect to wake to the sound of lyrical
birdsong before heading out into the forest on a
Jeep safari – the best are taken from dawn until
about 10am and from 4pm until dusk, as this is
when the animals are most active.
The excitement and anticipation of setting
out on a dawn safari is second to none. In the
midst of a jungle expedition, it is worth making
the time to visit nearby Indian villages to meet
the fascinating communities. After a day in the
wild, visitors can relax at ecologically sensitive
jungle retreats, where fabulous bush dinners are
served while ancient jungle tales are recounted
by local guides. With all this and so much
more, Madhya Pradesh is a land that will stay
with travellers long after they depart.
