August 1990, and Diana was on the cover of Tatler ‘havin’ a Wales of
a time’. Photographed on the 1989 royal tour of the Gulf States, the
Princess of Wales, power-suited in pink, had paired her signature pearls
with Oliver Goldsmith aviators as she giggled with sheiks and watched
camel races in the desert near Abu Dhabi. Her then-husband sat beside
her on a matching gold throne. That same year she was inducted into
the International Best-Dressed Hall of Fame, having evolved from
flounce-favouring Sloane to sleek sartorial superstardom. As designer
Jasper Conran told former Tatler Editor Tina Brown: ‘She did enjoy
the feeling of being a Forties movie star... It was all about the entrance,
everyone clapping and cheering. She loved that.’ Flash forward 29 years
and her style remains in the public eye, celebrated at Kensington Palace
in Diana: Designing for a Princess, a curation of her most gorgeous gowns
and sketches by her favourite designers that will change every six months.
