A

tul’s ideas, whether for craft
design or architecture, are
all rooted in tradition, but are
contemporary in form. Atul says,
“My work is rooted in traditional
skills with a contemporary spin
without tempering its essence. To
me the concept-freedom of living
enables designers like us to think
like a consumer and marry the
needs of ever-evolving lifestyle,
with a design-led solution and
that is what makes it interesting.”
In a panel discussion at Script by
Godrej & Boyce at Bengaluru,
which the artist was a part of,
it was interesting for him to
hear different perspectives on
how design in today’s context is
evolving and has therefore become
an intrinsic part of everyday life.
The artist says, “Script Huddle is a
great platform that brings together
like-minded people from the art
and design fraternity to share in a
conversation around how though
design freedom is expanding its
limits and stories of innovation in
design that deserve to be heard.”
Lighting was his first love and
that remains till today. Initially,
he developed paper sculptures as
lights, which was a first for India
on that scale. The other materials
he enjoys working with are steel,
paper and wood. Lighting was
