Country Gardens – July 2019

(lu) #1

The “nipper”—a small corked fl ask—was made specifi cally to
hold moonshine made from corn mash. Counterintuitive to our
impressions of a frugal past, these fl asks were most likely made
for single use then discarded. Perhaps for this reason, not many
of these pieces still exist. The ornamental corn beneath the
fl asks surely would have inspired a 19th-century potter.
