Marked “Etruscan” (Griffen, Smith and Hill)
American // late 19th century
Poorly paid young women were often employed to paint the
biscuit-fi red pottery following a prototype. Their range of
ages and skill resulted in inconsistent pieces, as illustrated by
these vivid begonia leaf trays marked Griffen, Smith and Hill.
The background is a medley of rex begonia leaves, including
Rosemary’s all-time favorite, ‘Fireworks’.
