SEDUM
HEIGHT/WIDTH: 4–30 inches
tall; 2–30 inches wide ZONES: 3 –
LIGHT CONDITIONS: Most species are
happiest in full sun. A few tolerate light
shade. PREFERRED SOIL: Excellent-draining
soil is the key to growing sedums. Tall species
thrive with average soil fertility; low-growing
ones enjoy gritty or even gravelly soil. Roots of
both types will rot with poor drainage. BEST
FEATURES: Tall species produce broccolilike
heads of small starry fl owers and fl eshy,
often colorful leaves. Low-growing
creepers display an amazing range
of foliage shapes, colors,
and textures.

irrigated border settings. Plan to cut
tall plants by half in late spring to force
strong, bushy growth.
PROPAGATION: Increase sedums by
division in early spring or by cuttings
of nonfl owering stems a bit later. Leaf
cuttings and seeds are alternate methods.
BEDS AND BORDERS: Select tall, upright-
growing stonecrops for these spaces.
‘Autumn Joy’ (‘Herbstfreude’) is the best-
known tall cultivar; ‘Autumn Fire’ is a more
compact improvement. For extra interest,
choose a cultivar with variegated foliage
such as ‘Beach Party’, ‘Frosty Morn’, or
‘Elsie’s Gold’.
GROUNDCOVER: Low-growing mounding
sedums such as S. album ‘Chubby Fingers’
and ‘Coral Carpet’ are perfect for rock
gardens and as groundcover. The new
knockout S. ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ sets
itself apart with yellow fl owers against a
backdrop of glossy, dark green foliage.
S. makinoi ‘Ogon’, which features bright
gold foliage, is more shade-tolerant but
less winter-hardy.
GREEN ROOFS: This option befi ts
species that can handle the heat and
special soil mix required for a roof’s
growing conditions. Try S. acre, especially
‘Aureum’, for its gold moss look, or
widow’s cross (S. pulchellum).
