Labour attacks ‘appalling waste’

as PM adds £2bn to no-deal fund

The huge cost of a no-deal Brexit has
been laid bare by the government’s
announce ment of plans to set aside
an extra £2.1bn for preparations such
as stockpiling medicines, 500 more

border offi cials and a public awareness
campaign about disruption.
The prime minister, Boris Johnson,
is ramping up the funding for a no-deal
Brexit on 31 October even though he
claims that reaching a deal with the
European Union is his preferred out-
come. The move, announced by Sajid
Javid, the chancellor, is designed to
show Brussels that the UK is ready to
countenance leaving without a deal in
three months’ time.
Javid will provide a new immedi-
ate cash boost of £1.1bn and make a
further £1bn available if necessary,

ing this year alone up to £6.3bn. Out
of the immediate cash injection, about
£344m will go to border operations, to
pay for 500 offi cers added to the 500
already promised this year, improving
the processing of passport applica-
tions, more training for customs staff
to help businesses with declarations,
and improving readiness for transport
disruption around Kent ports.
Another £434m will go towards
ensuring continuity of vital medi-
cines and medical products, including
freight capacity, warehousing and

advertising, consular help for British
people living abroad and support for
areas including Northern Ireland.
Labour branded the spending an
“appalling waste of tax payers’ cash,
all for the sake of Boris Johnson’s drive
towards a totally avoidable no deal”,
especially as the majority of MPs have
made clear their intention to block an
exit without a withdrawal agreement.
“This government could have ruled
out no deal, and spent these billions on
our schools, hospitals, and people,”
said John McDonnell, the
shadow chancellor. “Labour

Police are investigating six separate
drug-related deaths over three days in
Essex , prompting an urgent warning
over the use of illegal substances.
Essex police yesterday linked the
discovery of a woman in her 30s in
Southend on Sunday morning to the
investigation, bringing the death toll
in a six-mile radius in the county to
three men and three women since the
weekend.
Forensic tests are now under way
to fi nd out which drugs might be
responsible.
Ch Sup t Kevin Baldwin of Essex
police said: “All of the deaths occurred
in their own homes, which is an unu-
sual element because your own home
is normally a safe environment and
the circumstances suggest that they
weren’t able to call for assistance.
“We haven’t yet got a timeline of
when they might have taken the drugs
and at which point they passed away.”
It is too early to say
whether the drugs were
