Threat of league expulsion

still hanging over Bury

f
David Conn

Bury still face a threat of being
expelled from the Football League
after 125 years of membership if the
owner, Steve Dale, does not provide
the EFL with evidence that he has the
funding to pay former players and
full-time staff , and to run the club
this season.
The EFL has suspended the club’s
first fixture , against MK Dons on
Saturday, stating that Dale has not
shown them the required “proof of
funds” and that he must provide it
by 12 pm tomorrow or the scheduled
second match, away at Accrington
Stanley, will also be suspended.
If that does happen, the EFL board
will then meet to review Bury’s overall
situation and a possible expulsion
from the league is among the options
it would then consider. If that were to
happen, the EFL clarifi ed that League
One would be played with 23 rather
than 24 clubs and next season an
extra club would be promoted from
League Two.
Speaking to the Guardian the EFL’s
executive chair, Debbie Jevans, said:
“We asked for ‘suffi ciency of funds’ to
demonstrate that Bury can compete,
that staff are being paid on and off
the pitch. We gave a deadline for that
information, it was a real deadline,
I spoke to Mr Dale, he was aware of
it and, when it didn’t come through,
we took the only decision we could.
“Now we need the information
by this Friday or else the Accrington
Stanley match will be suspended.
And at that point the board will meet
to review the future. You can’t go
through a whole season one match
at a time.”
Dale said in a forthright statement
on Tuesday that he had indeed pro-
vided the EFL with proof of funds,
including to cope as requested with a
possible £1.5m loss which he described
as “fi ctional”. But Jevans said that

the EFL had asked for evidence that
former players – who were part of the
squad which won promotion from
League Two in May but then revealed
they had not been paid since February

  • have now been paid all the money
    owing to them.
Full-time staff must now also be
paid in full, as they are classed as
    “football creditors” in any insolvency
procedure, such as a company volun-
    tary arrangement (CVA) which Bury
    entered into last month.
At the time of the CVA, in which
    Dale committed to paying “non-foot-
ball creditors” 25p for every pound
owed, players were stated to have
been owed £405,815, within a total of
almost £1m owed to football creditors.
No separate category was noted for
    wages owed to full-time staff.
Jevans said the EFL has also been
asking for evidence that: “The club
could operate for a season, which
    means running a stadium, paying
players, staff , stewards; we asked
for that in very simple terms. Cur-
rently we have not received what we
    have asked for.”
Dale told the Guardian in response
that the CVA will be fi nanced and cover
the former players’ wages, that he is
still in discussions with the EFL over
the “mythical £1.5m,” and said that
current players have all been paid.
Jevans added that the EFL will
refl ect on its rules governing take-
overs in the light of the crisis at Bury
which has followed Dale’s £1 takeover
in December, as part of the league’s
    ongoing review of its governance.

Villiers and Ecclestone steer

England away from whitewash

Raf Nicholson
Bristol

“Australia are producing 20-year-old
superstars,” Tammy Beaumont had
said as she bemoaned the disparity
between the two sides after England’s
defeat at Hove on Sunday. Last night
England fi nally showed some fi ght,
courtesy of two 20-year-old stars of
their own, Mady Villiers and Sophie
Ecclestone, who between them took
fi ve wickets to reduce Australia to 122
for eight, after England had earlier put
139 on the board.
Introduced for the fi rst time in the
eighth over, the off -spinner Villiers –
on her international debut – had ini-
tially put down a caught and bowled
chance off ered up by Alyssa Healy but
got her revenge the following over
when Healy sen t up a catch straight
to Ecclestone at mid-off after a danger-
ous looking 28 up top.
Four balls later Villiers tempted
Ash Gardner into coming out of her

ground, and she departed for a duck
as Amy Jones whipped off the bails.
That left Australia 45 for four at the
halfway stage, as they had also lost
Meg Lanning early on, the Australia
captain dismissed for the fi rst time in
Twenty20s against England since 2016
as she was trapped lbw by England’s
other star, Ecclestone. Having upset
the Australian chase, Ecclestone then
dismissed Jess Jonassen and Delissa
Kimmince with successive deliveries
in the 19th over to hand England their
fi rst win of the series.
For once Ellyse Perry – named player
of the series for her 378 runs and 16
wickets – was unable to spoil England’s
party, her unbeaten 60 coming too late
to get Australia over the line.
In their innings England had ini-
tially looked at risk of another collapse
after the run-out of Heather Knight in
the 14th over by Perry with a brilliant
throw from midwicket. Jones was out
two balls later, edging to Healy behind
the stumps, leaving England fi ve down
with just 88 on the board.
However, a quick-fi re unbeaten 50
partnership between Lauren Winfi eld
and Katherine Brunt at the back end
of the innings– during which the pair
added 34 runs across the last three
overs and included a six launched
over midwicket and out of the playing
area by Brunt – laid a platform to allow
England to fi nish the series on a high.

St Helens lose Holbrook

to Gold Coast Titans

St Helens have begun the search
for a new head coach following
confi rmation that Justin Holbrook
will return to his native Australia
to join the Gold Coast Titans at the
end of the season. The 43-year-old,
who has transformed the fortunes
of the Super League leaders since
arriving in May 2017, is out of
contract and rejected the club’s off er
of a new deal in order to return to
the National Rugby League, where
he was assistant coach with Sydney
Roosters. The Titans said Holbrook
had agreed a two-year contract to

succeed Garth Brennan, who was
sacked this month with the team

Bridge collapse likely to
divert Yorkshire route

Organisers of the road world
championships in Yorkshire seem
certain to be forced to change the
route of the men’s elite race after
Grinton Moor Bridge was washed
away by fl oodwaters, leaving the
road impassable. With less than
two months until the race on
29 September, it i s unlikely the
bridge c an be repaired in time. The
Yorkshire 2019 chief executive, Andy
Hindley, said the fi rst priority had to
be for local residents cut off by the
bridge collapse. He said: “ We will
address any damage to race routes
with North Yorkshire county council
in due course.” PA Media
