(C. Jardin) #1
homophobic abuse [from West
Indies bowler Shannon Gabriel this
year] really impressed me,” Dixon
says. “It made me very proud. Joe
isn’t a bossy leader. He is more
humble, well respected by his
peers, hard-working.”
Franse, who made Dixon captain
straightaway despite him being in
the lower sixth, says he was
“lucky” to have had such talented
players. “Adam was phenomenal,”
he recalls. “He could have done it
on his own. But he was a team
player. He passed, he set up others,
he was an inspiration to many of
the juniors.”
Root, he recalls, was “not quite
at the level of the guys who have
gone on to play GB hockey”.
But he was as keen as any of
them. And Franse believes there is
no doubt hockey made the
cricketer a better all-round
sportsman. “Back in the day, lots of
players were like that – Jonty
Rhodes [who played hockey for
South Africa], Herschelle Gibbs –
but kids appear to choose earlier
now,” he says. “But I think it helped
him for sure. Yorkshire were happy
for him to play hockey. It was good
for his fitness, for his hand-eye
co-ordination. And he was just as
into it as the rest of them.
“While cricket was obviously his
priority, his first love, he never
missed a hockey match for a
cricket match. He was a striker. Joe
was probably not quite as skilful as
some of the others, although
I remember that bit of skill against
Bromsgrove!
“What he had above all was a
good brain. Like Adam, he was
very humble, very down to earth.
We’re so proud of what these boys
have gone on to achieve.”

RORY

BURNS, 28

All-rounder

Three-
dimensional
cricketer,
gutsy with
the bat and
ball. Ben never
gives in. He has
the ability to take
the game away
from the
opposition or
grab a
spectacular
catch, as we saw
in the World Cup.
He will run in all
day for the
team, trying his
heart out. Never
lets you down.

Bowler

Pace, chilled-out
bloke and it is
really exciting to
see what he will
bring in Tests.
Showed his
exceptional skills
in the World Cup.
Facing him in the
nets is not nice.
It will be a
challenge
keeping to him
but harder to bat
against him. He
has a deceptive
run-up and gains
pace from his
wrist and body
position.

BEN STOKES, 28 JOFR A ARCHER, 24

Gritty. We saw by
the way he
batted in the
West Indies that
he plays the
game hard and,
as Surrey captain,
he has decent
experience.
Having a leader
at the top of the
order is a benefit.

Batsman

Jason is a good
craic to be
around and I love
batting with him
in ODI
cricket.
He is pretty
laid-back but
works incredibly
hard on his game,
and the threat he
poses teams with
his ability to
change a game in
a short space of
time makes him
very dangerous.
He is desperate
to do well in Test
cricket.

JASON ROY, 29

Very experienced
cricketer who is a
character around
the dressing
room. Older,
wiser from his
years on the
county beat
and desperate to
take his
opportunity late
in his career.

Young cricketer
with such
maturity.
Left-arm option,
cheeky chappy
and we have seen
already how he
can play vital
knocks with the
bat and bowl very
effectively with
the swinging ball.

One of the nicest
guys you could
meet. Reliable
bowler, and
brilliant in our
conditions. Had a
great World Cup
and playing an
Ashes Test on his
home ground at
Edgbaston will be
massive for him.

An incredible
athlete, who puts
in a lot of work
on his batting
and fitness.
Unorthodox but
able to play both
attacking and
defensively in
Test cricket. He
loves getting
Batsman stuck in at five.

Legendary bloke,
lovely fella. We
were all gutted
he got out on 92
at Lord’s. Wants
to be called
“Tres” now after
Somerset legend
Marcus. Showed
last winter how
reliable he is with
Bowler the ball.

OLLY

STONE, 25

Nice guy. Again
had to overcome
a lot of injuries,
which shows he
has resilience and
is willing to put in
the hard work. He
made a good
debut against
Ireland at Lord’s
and he offers
hostile pace.

Bowler

STUART

BROAD, 33

His partnership
with Jimmy
(Anderson) is the
best in history. A
pleasure keeping
to him because
you are always in
the game. If the
ball is doing
anything he will
exploit
conditions.

Second-fastest
England player to
2,000 Test runs
and 100 wickets,
which goes
unrecognised. It
is hard to learn on
the job in Test
cricket, and has
done incredibly to
be so successful
as a spinner.

Bowler

The most prolific
seamer in the
history of Test
cricket. He never
gives in and,
credit to him,
is an opening
bowler still
going at the
age of 37 and
after playing
148 Tests.
Character has
got him
through some
setbacks with
injuries and
helped him
adapt to all
conditions.
