Glorious Goodwood — Day 3
REVENGE MISSION FOR HERMOSA
AidAn O’Brien’s quiet week by his own
high standards may take an upward turn
today courtesy of HERMOSA (Goodwood, 3.35)
in the nassau stakes.
The dual Guineas heroine suffered a surprise
defeat in the Coronation stakes at royal
Ascot to Watch Me, who won in emphatic
style, but Hermosa may have been left
vulnerable late on following a sustained set-to
with Pretty Pollyanna at the head of affairs.
The selection has the opportunity to make
amends at Goodwood and there could be
more improvement to come from the
daughter of Galileo now that she stretches
out to a mile and a quarter for the first time, a
trip more in keeping with her breeding.
Given she secured both Guineas wins in
hard-fought style at newmarket and the
Curragh, it was understandable that she was
not quite at her best at Ascot for her third
top-level appearance inside six weeks and a
41-day absence from the track may have given
her an opportunity to recharge the batteries.
French trainer Francis-Henri Graffard, the
architect of Hermosa’s Ascot demise with
Watch Me, will have designs on a similar result
today with French Oaks winner Channel and
it is significant he is prepared to take on the
might of Ballydoyle once again.
Channel knuckled down bravely to score
narrowly at Chantilly last month and she may
well prove the chief threat to Hermosa.

RECORD-BREAKING JOHNSTON
FRANKIE’S TOO
HOT TO HANDLE
TOO dArn HOT’s reputation
was totally restored yesterday
with victory in the sussex
stakes, as another Group One
win was claimed by the all-
conquering John Gosden-
Frankie dettori combination.
The win marked jockey dettori’s 11th
Group One win this season.
Fears about the effectiveness over a
mile of the evens favourite evaporated
as dettori extricated Too darn Hot
from a tight spot to win by a cosy half a
length from Circus Maximus. This was
revenge for Too darn Hot over the
winner of the st James’s Palace stakes
at royal Ascot.
Too darn Hot had been the champion
two-year-old last year, but injury dis-
rupted his preparation this term and
saw him miss the 2,000 Guineas. The
colt then failed to stay 10 furlongs on
his return in the dante stakes at York
in May, and was beaten in the irish
Guineas and at royal Ascot. success in
the seven-furlong Prix Jean Prat at
deauville earlier this month had put
the colt’s season back on track.
The horse’s trainer, Gosden, has
conceded the decisions taken in the
spring by him and simon Marsh, the
racing manager to Too darn Hot’s
owner-breeders Lord and Lady Lloyd
Webber, had been a mistake.
But yesterday’s win makes Too darn
Hot look ready to set out on the remain-
der of a season which will culminate in
the Breeders’ Cup Mile and, at least,
take in the Prix du Moulin along the
way. ‘What caught him out was the stiff
mile at the Curragh when we ran him
back too soon after the dante, and the
stiff mile with the rain at Ascot,’ Gosden
said. ‘He is an out-and-out speed horse.
‘This horse has fortunately overcome
his owner’s racing manager and trainer.
We got it wrong but the horse has come
right. He has proven being champion
two-year-old last year was no fluke.’
Having also won the King George
on saturday with enable and the
Goodwood Cup on Tuesday with
stradivarius, Gosden and dettori have
won three Group One races in five days.
For 48-year-old dettori, his career best
of 16 Group Ones in a season, in 2001, is
within touching distance.
dettori admitted he has been feeling
the big-race pressure. He said: ‘i have
had an amazing summer. i was waiting
for Too darn Hot in the paddock and i
said, “John, i will probably need a heart
transplant by the end of the week’’. He
replied, “shut up, you love it!’’ Maybe
he is right.
‘Too darn Hot has been very unlucky
but we finally got a good run at this
race. He has now won a proper Group
One in this country and his reputation
is back to where it should be.’
Also heading to the Breeders’ Cup
seems to be Liberty Beach, who over-
came trouble in running to win the
Molecomb stakes by a length from
Alligator Alley. Trainer John Quinn is
now eyeing the Juvenile Turf sprint at
santa Anita in California in november.
MARK JOHNSTON joined Sir Michael
Stoute as the joint most successful
trainer of all time at Glorious
Goodwood as a double with Sir Ron
Priestley and Mrs Bouquet took him
to 80 winners at this midsummer
Festival meeting.
The double also made Johnston the
first British trainer to have 50
winners in a month, having already
broken his own record of 47.
Johnston has had 208 runners in
July with 33 seconds and 25 thirds
contributing to his £1,099,472 in
prize money. His record-breaking
achievements came a day after the
torrential storms which hit North
Yorkshire, washed away six furlongs
of his all-weather gallop, caused
horses to be moved from boxes and
flooded his home.
Johnston said: ‘I don’t know how
bad it is back home but there are
people worse off and the horses
are still getting out.
‘We push numbers all the time and
it’s nice beating these records.’

Goodfellow’s analysis
The trip (12f) looked to be beyond
SINJAARI in a warm Royal Ascot
handicap last time and he makes plenty of appeal now he reverts to today’s dis-
tance. He had previously run a blinder in one of the most competitive 10f handi-
cap of the season at Newbury when touched off by Headman (Forest Of Dean
4th) and it is worth noting he was forced to ride for much of the Ascot contest
which took its toll late on. Walkinthesand is similarly progressive and proved a
length too strong for Korcho when they met on the July Course. There may not
be much between them once more with both improving with each outing.

The Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot is well represented here with runner-up
THREAT and Guildsman (3rd) renewing rivalries. The former narrowly pre-
vailed in their private duel last month but neither could resist Arizona who proved
too strong on the day. Guildsman has since run creditably at Newmarket and
boasts valuable experience of today’s venue courtesy of an impressive maiden
win in a fast time. However, Threat narrowly gains the nod as he would have
learned plenty from his Ascot excursion, just the second run of his life, and he is
held in high esteem at home.

Bookmakers may not take too many chances with CONSTANTINOPLE or
Spanish Mission here and it is understandable to see why. The former arrives
on the back of a fine effort at the Royal meeting when he was ambushed late
on by stablemate South Pacific. He did precious little wrong that day and fight-
ing off a number of battles in the straight arguably left him vulnerable late on.
Spanish Mission was extremely well backed prior to bolting up at Newmarket
where he relished the fast ground to score readily. He already boasts track expe-
rience courtesy of a fine run here behind Private Secretary and is reluctantly
overlooked with connections on record stating he must have fast ground.
