SPORT IN BRIEF

n THE R&A made clear yesterday that the men’s Open will not be
going to Wales in the foreseeable future. No sooner had they
announced that the Women’s Open will be staged at Royal
Porthcawl in Mid Glamorgan in 2021, than the subject turned to
the possibility of the men following suit. Club captain Rhys James
was enthusiastic, but Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, executive director
of championships for the R&A, said: ‘I can be quite clear that we
currently have no plans to take the Open to Porthcawl.’

HEATON POISED FOR

£8m VILLA SWITCH

BURNLEY goalkeeper Tom
Heaton was last night on the
verge of joining Aston Villa in a
deal worth £8million.
Villa had a £4m offer for the
33-year-old England keeper
rejected earlier this summer.
Burnley have agreed a £3.5m
fee for Leeds goalkeeper Bailey
Peacock-Farrell. They are also
keen to offload Joe Hart, who is
wanted by Stoke.

FOOTBALL

DIGEST

ENGLAND forward Toni
Duggan has signed a
two-year deal with Atletico
Madrid Women.

BURY’S financial crisis
eased slightly yesterday
when the High Court dismissed
a winding-up petition against
the League One club for
£1million in unpaid taxes.

BRUCE WILL HAND

STARS FRESH DEALS
STEVE BRUCE wants to secure
the future of senior Newcastle
players by handing them new
contracts. Jonjo Shelvey, Matt
Ritchie and Isaac Hayden have
less than two years on their
deals. Goalkeeper Martin
Dubravka is another Bruce
rates highly. Should they fend
off interest from Manchester
United in midfielder Sean
Longstaff, then he is set to
negotiate new terms.
Newcastle are keen on United’s
Axel Tuanzebe but must first
wait for Harry Maguire to
secure a switch to Old Trafford.

ENGLISH WOMEN

ARE A MAJOR HIT

by DEREK

LAWRENSON
Golf Correspondent
reports from Woburn
O

N America’s Golf
Channel website,
the headline might
have lacked spar-
kle, but it illus-
trated the global impact
they have been having on
the women’s game.
‘Englishwomen on the rise for
home major, Solheim Cup run,’ it
said. Starting here today, with
the first round of the AIG
Women’s British Open and
concluding with the Solheim
Cup at Gleneagles in seven
weeks, the best trio since Laura
Davies, Alison Nicholas and
Trish Johnson were winning
majors and titles for fun in the
late 1980s, have the platform to
show what all the fuss is about.
Woburn member Charley Hull
and Bronte Law have won
trophies already this season,
while Georgia Hall is defending
champion, albeit one without
silverware to show for her efforts,
since the replica trophy given to
her last year was stolen.
They are not alone, with Mel
Reid, Meg MacLaren and Jodi
Ewart Shadoff all on the Solheim
radar. ‘We could see five players
from England on the team and
that would be incredible,’ said
31-year-old Reid. ‘There’s some-
thing special happening and let’s
see where it takes us, but it’s cer-
tainly the strongest group we’ve
had since I turned pro.’
Law, a standout amateur at the
prestigious UCLA (University of
California, Los Angeles) is the
least known but highest ranked,
at 22nd in the world, with Hull at
27th and Hall at 30th. ‘I’ve known
Bronte for a while and she’s a lit-
tle firecracker,’ said Reid. ‘I think
she’ll make the Solheim team
and will be a huge asset.’
The 24-year-old from Manches-
ter is under scrutiny this week.

DEREK LAWRENSON

Law has
not played
enough
times in
Europe to
qualify auto-
matically for
the team, and
will have to rely on a wildcard.
One of her playing partners for
the first two rounds just happens
to be the captain, Catriona
Matthew.
‘A bit more nerve-wracking for
her, I think,’ said Matthew, smil-
ing. ‘It’s pure coincidence we’re
playing together but I’m looking
forward to seeing how she per-
forms. You learn more watching
people in competition.’
It would be a major surprise if
Law — the only British or Irish
player to win five points out of
five at the Curtis Cup — is not in
already, alongside fellow
certainties Hall and Hull.
Reid is showing form at just the
right time following a period of
upheaval, while Ewart Shadoff ’s
efforts have been hampered by a
back injury. MacLaren could do
with a big week. Against the
cream of American golf, and the
impressive representation of
20 Koreans, the Solheim Cup
provides the great sub-plot this
week, with the Open being the
penultimate qualifying event.
As Matthew said, there is no
better stage to star on. ‘I’ve got a
group I’m looking at, others that
I’m keeping an eye on, but if
someone else were to win this
event, it’s entirely possible they
could come from leftfield to
make the team,’ she said.

n GODOLPHIN jockey William Buick will make
his comeback at Newmarket tomorrow evening
after being out of action since May when a fall
at Ascot left him suffering from post head-injury
syndrome. The 31-year-old is due to ride two
horses for trainer Charlie Appleby, although
his comeback is subject to final BHA medical
approval.

SUNDERLAND have
accepted an offer from Hull
City for captain George
Honeyman. They are willing to
let the midfielder leave rather
than risk losing him on a free
transfer next summer.

NAPOLI are targeting
Wilfried Zaha after failing
to land Nicolas Pepe, who is
bound for Arsenal. EVERTON had
a £55m bid for Zaha rejected,
but are close to selling winger
Henry Onyekuru to Monaco for
£13.7m and want Southampton
midfielder Mario Lemina.
