ENGLAND captain Joe
Root has dismissed Tim
Paine’s provocative
claim that Edgbaston
does not feature in the
top 15 most intimidat-
ing grounds in cricket.
The Australian captain
threw down the gauntlet to
England fans on the eve of
the Ashes by claiming the
raucous crowd will have no
impact on today’s first Test.
England have lost only one
Test match here since 2001,
while the Hollies Stand is
widely regarded as one of the
rowdiest on the circuit. Three
weeks ago, it roared Eng-
land to a thumping
eight-wicket win over
the Australians in the
World Cup semi-final.
But Paine said he was
unconcerned by Edg-
baston’s reputation as
English cricket’s fortress.
‘England haven’t lost here in
how long? I don’t even know,
I haven’t looked at it and it
doesn’t concern us,’ he said.
‘If we execute our skills,
it doesn’t matter if we’re
