years since the late, great Sir
Edmund Hillary was born. We
take a look back at his family
album and the legendary man
behind the mountain.

As you can probably tell from
the occupation I’ve chosen,
I’m a lot more comfortable
dealing with words than
numbers, but this week has
somehow become chock-a-
block full of sums!
You’ll have just turned the
page from our special 80th
anniversary of The Wizard of
Oz (for which I have to make
an apology to my parents,
who will no doubt still be
able to remember every line
of the film thanks to many
years of me watching it over
and over again) and I must
say, I nearly popped a blood
vessel doing the maths on
what US$100 in 1939 would
equate to today!
I had to check it three times
to make sure Toto the dog
really did take home more
than NZ$3000 a week for his
role. That’s a lot of dog roll!
Elsewhere in this issue we
celebrate 50 years since that
“giant leap for mankind”.
I was thrilled when I pulled
out our issues from 1969 to
discover the Weekly had
interviewed none other than
Jan Armstrong, Pat Collins and
Joan Aldrin in their homes as
their husbands made history.
It’s a fascinating snapshot of
the time, with insights into the
