treatment that removes
facial hair – both the fine,
fluffy kind, and those pesky
ones on the chin. “This type
of hair is both too light and
fine for laser hair removal
(as there needs to be
pigment present in the hair),
and not suitable for waxing,
especially on the face,” says
Nicky Shore of OFF & ON.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Skin is cleansed and then
a metal blade is brushed
along the face to remove all
the tiny downy hairs on the
skin’s surface. “Through
the process, which feels a
little like having a facial, skin is
delicately exfoliated and left
super smooth,” says Nicky.
WHAT ELSE DO I NEED
TO KNOW? Your hair won’t
grow back differently. “The hair
follicle contains the DNA which
is programmed to produce
the hair type,” explains Nicky.
“Dermaplaning will not alter
the DNA of the follicle as
you are cutting the hair at the
skin’s surface, therefore it is
impossible to make the hair
thicker or darker than before.”
The existing hair will feel
different, though. “What you
do see and feel before that hair
sheds from the follicle is the
blunter and slightly thicker
cross section where it has been
cut, versus the tip of the hair
before cutting,” says Nicky.
HOW OFTEN WILL I
NEED TO HAVE IT DONE?
For the best results, Nicky
recommends repeating
dermaplaning every 4-6 weeks,however, keep in mind it’s just
as good as a one-off for a
special event to make your
skin beautifully smooth,
allowing your foundation
to sit perfectly.
COST? Many beauty clinics
offer dermaplaning at various
prices. At OFF & ON, expect
to pay $72 for dermaplaning
or $82 for a dermplaning and
