OUT, DAMN SPOT
WHAT: Laser Glow Face Therapy ($728; 45 minutes)
WHERE: Privé Clinic at #03-03 Palais Renaissance
Years of my taking it for granted that BB cream counted as
sunblock have paid off handsomely with sun spots, including a
pronounced one on my right cheek. Instead of taking better
care of my skin on a daily basis, I rely on the occasional laser
quick fix, such as Privé Clinic’s Laser Glow Face Therapy.
This started with a facial that included quick extractions
and microdermabrasion, to gently buff away dull, rough
surface skin and even some surface pigmentation. I was then
led to another room, where the chirpy Dr Shirley Kwee
examined my skin and explained the short-pulsed laser
treatment and the aftercare.
At the heart of the treatment is the pico laser. The
high -energy but low heat laser shatters pigment particles,
which the body then gradually removes, with little discomfort.
It also rejuvenates skin by stimulating collagen and elastin
production. No numbing gel was needed as a constant blast of
cold air was used instead to counter the very mild snapping
sensation as the laser was passed over my face – painless,
really. Dr Kwee switched the laser setting to treat the dark
spots on my cheekbones. While this was slightly more painful,
the numbing cold of the air being directed at the same spot was
acutely more uncomfortable.
I returned to the other room, where a sheet mask was
applied to reduce swelling and hydrate my skin, then sunblock
before I was allowed to leave. Patients have to purchase a
two-week dosage of creams if they undergo the more intensive
spot treatment – one reduces inflammation, the other prevents
re-pigmentation. My lasered spot was slightly red, and the low
burn lasted for two days.
I’m pretty fair to start with, so I can’t say I noticed any
immediate overall brightening. But over the next week,
I realised that my concealer, which was a shade too light, now
better matched my skin tone. I waited for the large spot to crust,
but it didn’t. I waited for it to lighten, but it didn’t. But on a
follow-up treatment a month later, Dr Kwee used a higher
setting on my dark spots, and I was pleased to see them fade
over a few weeks after initially darkening. – GT
