I watched her give birth, so it was nice for her
to see the same thing. I was on the same ward
at Watford General Hospital as where my mum
had given birth – I was in the next room in fact!

Did you have any pain relief?
Lacey: None, just gas and air. As soon as I got
in the water, the pain halved. You hear so many
horror stories about labour but I feel lucky to
be able to say I had a really lovely time. Not
everyone has a horrible time and I would’ve
liked to have heard more positive stories. It
was painful but I enjoyed it. Matt videoed it, so
we’ll always have that. We’ve already watched
it back!

Matt, how did it feel to see Lacey giving
birth to Dusty?
Watching Lacey give birth is the best thing I’ve
ever seen and it made me so proud of her.
Lacey: That’s what it takes for him to be proud
of me [laughs].
Matt: [Laughs] I’m always proud of her but
seeing Lacey bring new life into this world was
amazing. I knew she could do it, though – she’s
a strong woman.

Was it emotional?
Lacey: I cried, my mum cried, Matt cried!
Matt: Her mum and I had our arms around
each other. It’s definitely brought me and her

mum Bev closer together, we were a team. One
of us was rubbing her back, or splashing water
on her and making sure she had chocolate.
Lacey: Now they take the mickey out of me,
they message each other videos of me making
funny noises [laughs].

You didn’t know you were having a girl,
did you?
Matt: No, and when she first came out they
handed me the baby and asked me to reveal
the gender. For a second, I thought it was a
boy, as I saw the umbilical cord! I thought, go
on son! [Laughs.] I then cut the umbilical cord,
which was surreal.
