Truck & Driver July 2019

A sign of the times
If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a... slightly
rude sign? North Shropshire Nige has been busy this month
(see ‘Snapshot’, p22). He says: “Road signs have appeared
deep in the Welsh forests. This one (right) alerts walkers that
timber haulage is operating in this area and another sign
alerts the public that timber trucks will be turning around.”
Well, if it’s getting the safety message over, then it’s okay
with us. If anyone else has some similarly amusing or
otherwise interesting truck-based acronyms, let us know.

Small and mighty!

The UK’s first Volvo

FM Dual-Clutch

Burcombe Haulage of Saltash, Cornwall has put a
500hp FM Globetrotter into service fitted with the I-Shift
Dual-Clutch gearbox.
Stuart Wilkie, Burcombe Haulage transport manager,
explains: “We operate an existing Volvo FH fitted with
I-Shift Dual-Clutch and know it shortens journey times;
many gearchanges are required when crossing the hills
of Cornwall and Devon on night trunks.”
The lower, narrower cab of the FM is ideal for the
numerous tight, tree-lined roads of the South West on
day shift, so it really is the ideal vehicle for the job.

Pitch up for

a party!

Party on the Pitch is a family-orientated
truck show taking place at Whitchurch
Rugby Club, Shropshire on the
weekend of 1/2 June. Following the
success of the first event last year, the
2019 edition looks to be even bigger
and better, with more than 130 trucks
booked in so far.
The Jez Avery stunt show is one of
the centrepiece features of the show,
along with a special display of mighty
Scania T-cabs! Normal truck entry is
just £35.00 for the weekend, but if you
happen to bring a mighty ‘bullnose’
Scania then it’s £20.00. Adult show
tickets are £8.00 each, with children
and OAPs going free.
Shropshire, and neighbouring Wales, is
home to some of the smartest trucks and
liveries in the land. PotP will have loads of
cool trucks on show, from both local
hauliers and far beyond, new and old!
