TUNE IN RADIO

It may have come to your
notice that, for some weird
reason, the AM radio signal is
hopeless in many modern
vehicles, including trucks. Also,
large swathes of the country
can’t get a DAB signal. What’s
that all about? If you like your
sports and talk radio, for
example Radio 5 Live 909/693
or Talk Sport 1089/1053, you
can find it’s difficult or even
impossible to listen to.
This is where Tune In
Radio’s app comes in. It gives
you access to hundreds of
radio stations, which can be
streamed online in lovely clear
audio. So if you’re on the
nightshift, and want to listen in
to a crucial mid-week football
game, here’s a solution.
The app also provides easy
access to a plethora of
podcasts, recommending them
by category, so it’s easy to

discover new and interesting
listening material.
It’s worth keeping an eye on
your data though, as
streaming audio for hours at a
time can put a serious dent in
your monthly allowance.

WARMING TO LUKE
Who knew that BBC journalist Frank
Gardner writes tense, action-packed
espionage thrillers? Shot 11 times, left for
dead by terrorists in Saudi Arabia in 2004
and now partially paralysed, the Beeb’s
security correspondent knows his subject

  • and in this, his first novel, it shows.
    Crisis introduces us to ex-SBS
    commando and freshly appointed MI6
    operative Luke Carlton, who becomes
entangled in an ingenious plot by a
    revengeful Columbian drug trafficker to
wreak havoc and destruction on the
British state that has been picking away
    at the coke baron’s profits.
Don’t be put off by the 550 pages; at the end of this intelligent,
high-voltage page-turner you’ll be left wanting more. Chris Turner

SHADES OF

GR AY

I’ve been a David Gray fan since
1998 when he launched White
Ladder, his first album to receive
critical acclaim; it was, in fact, his

fourth album release. The English
singer/songwriter’s background is
in folk-rock but White Ladder is
often described as ‘folktronic’,
making liberal use of computer-
generated sound.
More uplifting than some – in
particular, 2002’s White Ladder
follow-up, New Day at Midnight,
dedicated to his father, who died
in 2001 – Gold in a Brass Age
further underlines Gray’s lyrical
genius. A fine musician, criminally
underrated. Chris Turner

’80s R E V I VA L
Two albums that just need to be
bought together – like one and
you’ll like the other. Which is
weird really, given that State of
Salazar is a group of young
Swedes and Toby Hitchcock hails
from Indiana, USA and shot to
fame as the vocalist with Pride of
Lions. State of Salazar are five
former Swedish music students
who openly confess an adoration
for all things AOR and melodic rock. With no twists, individual
takes or reinvention beyond a slightly fuller sound, both albums
sound as if they could have been
recorded in the ’80s. Like
Survivor/Toto/Journey/Foreigner?
Then you’ll love both of these...
