BUYING EURO 6

(^32) July 2019 Truck & Driver
P
icture the scene: you’re
an existing or potential
owner-driver who has
just picked up a new
customer but the work
involves driving into central
London, where the Ultra Low
Emissions Zone (ULEZ) is now
in force. Or you’ve just had a
vehicle die on you, you know
you’ll need to go into one of the

Moving from Euro 5 to Euro 6 will prove

costly, but your work as an owner-driver may

demand the greener engine. How much will a

Euro 6 truck from the big seven cost you?

many cities proposing a Clean
Air Zone in the near future, so
you’ll have to upgrade at the
same time as replacing.
The common factor in both of
these examples is that you need
to go out and buy a Euro 6
vehicle a bit quick – and we’ll
assume you don’t want to spend
any more money than you have
to. Fear not, however, because

before you start banging on
doors making enquiries and
screwing up your credit rating,
we at T&D have done some of
the initial legwork for you.
We asked all seven major
truck manufacturers what they
could offer us as the cheapest
entry into a used Euro 6 tractor,
and the following is what they
came up with.

Please bear in mind,
obviously, that all of the finance
options listed here are purely
hypothetical to give you some
idea of what’s out there, are
subject to terms and conditions,
and may vary depending on
individual circumstances.

Scania
Scania offered us two sample
trucks, both 64-plate R450 6x2
midlifts. Both are ex-contract
vehicles and come with full
service history, as well as 12
months’ MoT and a 12-month
Scania driveline warranty, which
also gives you access to the
breakdown service Scania
Assist. The only difference
between them is the mileage,
which makes quite a difference
to the numbers.
PE64 UST has 434,000km on
the clock and is priced at
£36,500 plus VAT.
Finance over 48 months
would cost about £900 per month
with a deposit of £1800.
PE64 EUH has 735,000km on
the clock and is priced at
£32,500 plus VAT.
Finance over the same period
would be about £875 per month
with a deposit of £1600.
PE64 EUH would also qualify
for Scania’s current Rent to Buy
scheme for trucks with 650,000-
800,000km on them. With this
option you pay an initial fee of
£295 per vehicle and a monthly
rental for 12 months of £1121.67
plus VAT, followed by £845 per
month for 30 months to complete
the purchase.
During the 12 months of
rental at the beginning of this
deal, and so long as the truck is
free from defects and damage,
you can pull out entirely and
return the motor – so that’s
possibly a good way to test the
waters for a start-up owner-driver
or for initial fleet expansion.

Daf
If a Daf takes your fancy, we’re
reliably informed that a 2014
Euro 6 FTGXF460 Space Cab
will cost you in the region of
£22,000 to £26,000 plus VAT,
depending on mileage. On hire
purchase over three years, this
would work out, based on 10%
up front, at about £650-£750 per
month, though this could be a
little less with a larger deposit.
