BUYING EURO 6

(^34) July 2019 Truck & Driver
Renault
Renault says it currently
has a number of 15-plate, Euro 6
Range T 460.25 6x2 tractor units
available from £27,500 plus VAT
dependent on mileage and spec.
These come with a minimum of
six months’ MoT and a 12-month
driveline warranty.
Renault is advertising an offer
for the above, on hire purchase
or finance lease, for £749.00 plus
VAT per month over 36 months,
with a 10% deposit.
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz allowed us to
choose a vehicle from its
extensive stock list, so bearing in
mind our aim here is to get into
Euro 6 as economically as
possible, we’re going for YP64
JWZ, a low-roofed but perfectly
serviceable Actros 2543LS with
588,913km on the clock and an
asking price of £24,994 plus VAT.
All Mercedes-Benz Approved
Used trucks come with a
minimum of six months’ MoT and
six months’ mechanical
breakdown insurance as standard.
We could buy YP64 JWZ on hire
purchase (HP), over either 24 or
36 months, and the figures stack
up as follows (all excluding VAT):
Two years’ HP – deposit of
£7498.50 followed by 24
payments of £979.37.
Three years’ HP – deposit of
£7498.50 followed by 36
payments of £666.66.
On top of both of these
options are an acceptance fee of
£150.00 and an option to
purchase fee of £10.00.
Iveco
Iveco says the best option from a
customer point of view is not to
buy at all but instead to take an
operating lease, which includes
repair and maintenance.
For a hypothetical 65-plate
Stralis AS440S46TX 6x2 midlift
460hp Euro 6 tractor with Hi-Way
cab and 239,000km on the clock,
the numbers look like this:
Initial rental – £2386.50.
This is followed by 23
instalments of £795.50 per
month plus 24 instalments of
£326.83 per month for an
Elements repair and
maintenance package.
Overall, this deal works out to
the equivalent of, all in, £259 per
week. VAT is due with each rental
payment and you will not own the
equipment at the end of the
agreement. Return conditions
apply. A documentation fee of
£200 plus VAT will be collected
with the first rental.
The cost of Euro 6
It’s been widely claimed that residuals are now so low on Euro
5 vehicles that it’s fair to say the bottom has dropped out of the
market for them entirely.
We did a quick straw poll of the five manufacturers willing to
give us numbers and found that, all other things being equal,
the average difference in asking price between Euro 5 and
Euro 6 trucks of similar ages was about £8000.
Obviously, there are examples where the gap is both far
less – in one case just £3000 – or as high as £11,000 for more
premium-specced trucks, but the point remains. The need for
Euro 6 emissions will, on its own, cost you serious money.
