Truck Industries –
latterly Renault
Véhicules Industriels
- had evolved out of a
series of uncomfortable late
1970s mergers. A confused
product range lacked appeal
outside France and Spain, and
numbers were suffering as a
result. It urgently needed a bolt
from the blue. Enter Virage or
VE10, a revolutionary concept
vehicle that really made
everyone sit up and take notice.
It was 1985, and high-roof,
big-space cabs such as Volvo’s
Globetrotter and Daf’s Space
Cab were still something of a
novelty. Size and space-wise, the
Virage blew them all away. With
