Airgun World – July 2019

T

his month has been one of
extremes. First the positives,
and an extremely rewarding visit
to Umarex in Germany to test and
check on the progress of the
company’s Reign bullpup. It was a
flying visit in more ways than one,
with every minute at the factory
packed with real-time range
testing, followed by watching the
entire assembly of the rifles that
will make up the first batch set for
delivery to the UK in a month or
so. I’ve always enjoyed being part
of this pre-production testing, and
I’ve been lucky enough to be
involved in it for many years, as
you’ll see in this month’s Editor’s
Test. I’ll bring you the first test on
the production Reign as soon as it
lands in the UK, and before I do
that, I’ll reveal the inside story of
that trip to Umarex in next
month’s Airgun World.

WHAT A SHOW
I was only back home for a day
before I was re-packing my case
for the two-day Northern Shooting
Show in Harrogate. Now in its third
year, the NSS has already
established itself as a must-do
event with its own atmosphere and
identity, and this year was better
than ever, with at least 2,000 more
visitors through the turnstiles.
‘The Northern’ occupies the
Yorkshire Event Centre, and its
combination of indoor and outdoor
display areas is truly superb.
There’s a terrific, friendly buzz
about this show, and Richard

Stokoe and his team couldn’t be
more helpful. Next year’s
‘Northern’ is already logged in my
calendar and I know it will give us
even more.

BACK TO EARTH
At the other end of the euphoric
scale, the clumsy saga of the
general licences rumbles on,
hopefully toward a conclusion that
will satisfy all stakeholders. It’s
been difficult at times to maintain
my normally relentless positivity,
but that’s the only mindset that will
get us to the other side of this
mess, and in the shape we need to
be to establish a foundation for the
future. As promised, we’ll bring you
definitive news as soon as the facts
are confirmed and advice can be
relied upon. To speculate in any
way would be irresponsible and
counterproductive, and there’s
more than enough confusion going
on right now, without this magazine
adding to it. Please read what Phill
Price has to say on this subject on
page 50, plus the wise words of
our readers on the letters page.

BUILDING A
GREAT DAY OUT
I’ll finish on a huge positive, with
the news of a great event we’re

planning for Tuesday September
the 17th at my club in Bisley. You
can read more about it on page
12 of this issue, and I can already
promise it’s going to be something
truly special for airgunners of all
kinds.
This day has long been a dream
of mine, and now it’s going to
happen. For years I’ve seen, and
been a part of, the power of
personal coaching and I can’t wait
to spread its benefits further
afield., Please study what’s on
offer and come along to learn,
laugh, and share it with us. It’s
going to be amazing.
I hope you enjoy this July
edition of Airgun World as much
as we’ve enjoyed putting it
together. There’s a ton of stuff to
get stuck into, so I’ll sign off now
and see you next month.
