apply ‘hold’, but one or two zero checks gave
me the exact POA I required.
It wasn’t long before the first set of eyes
appeared in the thermal, instantly picked up
with the 455. Due to the close-range shooting,
I had opted for the standard 940 IR that
comes with the Pulsar Ultra, and it performed
perfectly well at those distances, and worked
well out to 100 yards whilst I was scanning the
area. Retrieving the rats presented the same
problem as last time. It was very unstable
underfoot and many of the rats fell back into
their holes, so the photos don’t show the full
story. I took a good 20 of the rats and only
managed to retrieve five, but that’s the
problem when shooting in muck piles and I
wasn’t losing too much sleep over it. I was
already making plans for the weekend’s air
attack on the skinnies and woodies.SIGHTS AND SOUNDS
On Saturday, I repaired and filled the feeders on
another favourite wood I have. I am slowly
replacing the wooden feeders with newer,galvanised steel, which are 100% squirrel proof- I’ll try to do a feature of the build later in the
year. These feeders take around seven litres of
my skinny mix, and in the right areas can
produce good numbers. I hadn’t been here for
quite a while and there was a bit of maintenance
to carry out, from refixing lids on the older
wooden feeders where the badgers have had a
go, to ratching around the bases of the trees to
create a visible target area and to stir up some of
the woodland aroma that brings the skinnies in.
Once all the chores had been taken care of
I just cannot get enough of the
outdoors, especially when the
bluebells are out.
