begana briskwalkupMamTortoseewhat
thelandscapelookedlikeonthisalmost
cloudlessmorning.Withina fewminutes
we’dreachedthesummitandcould
enjoypanoramicviewsin alldirections.
We’dalreadyagreedtoheaddowntothe
famousgatenearHollinsCross,andaswe
approachedthescenelightenedasthesun
roseclosertothehorizon,allowingusto

seethattheskywascompletelyclearand
generallyquiteboringin itsappearance.
I’dshotin theseconditionsat thislocation
beforesoknewtheresultingimagesweren’t
destinedto begreat,andsincewecould
seemistrisingupbehindLoseHilla mileor
twoaway,wedecidedto pressondespite
thisdecisionseriouslyeatingintowhatlittle
timewehaduntilthesuncameup.We
approachedLoseHilljusta fewminutesto
spareasthesunreachedthehorizon.

photography we’d have needed to be on Win
Hill, which was too far away to walk. To make
the most of the time we had, we decided to
stay put and turn our back to the rising sun
to shoot HDR and panoramic images of the
Great Ridge. Before we did that, though,
Jon fired off a few frames to capture the sun
as it peeked above the horizon.
Afterwards, Jon began to frame up a
shot along the Great Ridge but the angle of
view of his 21mm lens was far too wide and
included too much foreground. Switching
to his 55mm wouldn’t have solved the
problem, so I suggested he borrow my
