T

he French Bulldog is not a very active
dog, but will go out of his way to make
you happy. He has an overall positive
attitude and craves human companionship.
Due to these fun traits, he does well at playing
games with the family, which will also help to
keep him in shape.

What the breeders say
We asked a few French Bulldog breeders about
the breed, and this is what Altha Ferreira
from Edmondo French Bulldog Breeders
and Aleksandra Dybala from Fredka French
Bulldogs have to say:

What makes this breed special?
Altha Ferreira The French Bulldog’s casual
and easy ways, the ability to adapt to your
lifestyle and be a happy companion dog makes
him special.
Aleksandra Dybala They are most dedicated
companions, and have a very positive nature –
nothing like a Frenchie to put a smile on your
face. They are definitely people dogs, and they
will always be with you. They have very playful
personalities – they are forever puppies. These
dogs don’t require much space so they make
great apartment dogs. The French Bulldog
requires minimal grooming.

What is the most important factor potential
pet owners should consider before getting
this dog?
Altha Ferreira Do your homework. Get the
best reputable breeder to start with. Know
their needs and have as much knowledge
about this special breed as possible. This is a
strong and tough little dog. Be sure that you
can provide a cool place in summer months
when it’s very hot. Loads of love and attention,
good food and care is all that is needed to have
a happy Frenchie.
Aleksandra Dybala They can be prone to
health issues especially if bought from a

non-reputable breeder. Be aware that non-
standard colours can have serious health
issues like skin problems, blindness and
deafness, among many.
Consider buying from a breeder who adheres
to the breed standards and takes their dogs
to shows, as the show people are genuinely
interested in the breed and want to improve
the breed instead of only breeding for profit.
When done correctly and with integrity,
French Bulldogs are an extremely difficult
dog to breed so be wary of breeders who are
willing to sell their puppies to anyone without
breeding restrictions.
Because they are so difficult to breed they do
cost a lot of money. If you see a cheap French
Bulldog it’s probably a scam or a puppy mill.
Join a French Bulldog Club such as the
KLUN French Bulldog Club of Gauteng.
It’s open to anyone and you will get a lot of
support and advice.

In short, sum up the character of this dog
Altha Ferreira He will be your best buddy and
entertainer for life. They are just very special
and clever little bodies.
Aleksandra Dybala They are the most amazing
little creatures. Once you own a Frenchie you
will never want another breed.
