It starts with us, even if it is just
one plastic straw at a time. Instead
of drinking coffee from a take-away
cup, or eating take-away food served
or wrapped in plastic, use reusable
containers. We should open our eyes
and ears and realise what we are doing
to Mother Earth.
Luckily, there are more and more
restaurants that supply paper straws
instead of plastic and who use paper
take-away containers. But, what are
you doing about the situation? Read
more about the effects of plastic
pollution on our marine life on
page 6. It is time to say no to plastic,
for the sake of our oceans!

We can no longer turn a blind eye.
We are destroying the planet and its
animals bit by bit with our selfish ways.
It is us, humans, who knowingly and
unknowingly cause marine animals to
die due to our pollution. Plastic particles
end up in their intestines, garbage
suffocates them or cause their starvation
directly or indirectly.
No, we don’t personally go and
throw our rubbish in the ocean, but we
shouldn’t fool ourselves – this is where
it ends up. And who suffers at the
end of the day? Not humans, but the
creatures in the sea.
Plastic items seem to be the biggest
problem. And come to think of it, plastic
made a big appearance in the 1960s and
‘70s, and it takes plastic 450 to 1,
years to decompose.
With such devastating results after just
five decades of plastic pollution, where
will it end if we don’t stop using plastic
items now?
