T
he Selkirk Rex is one of those cats
who will always entertain you with
her playfulness and curiosity. She
might not be the most talkative cat, but she
will follow you around the house to be with
you. She will also easily curl up on your lap
to demand some attention.
The look
This cat has a distinctive look that is
enhanced by a thick, plush coat with ringlets.
Her coat can be long- or shorthaired and any
colour or pattern is acceptable. The shorthair
has a soft, plush, full curl that is dense, while
the longhair isn’t as plush. The tail curls
of the longhair are plumy and stand away
from the tail. The degree of curl varies with
the length of her hair, age and gender. The
curliness increases around her neck, tail
and stomach.
Her intelligence shines through her big,
round eyes, which can be copper, gold,
yellow, green or blue.
Grooming
Both the short- and longhair varieties
require moderate grooming. In fact, this
curly cat shouldn’t be brushed too often,
but rather combed to keep her coat from
frizzing. Always ask the breeder for the best
grooming advice.
Background
The Selkirk Rex is a fairly new breed that
comes from a kitten who was discovered
in the late ‘80s. This ‘unusual’ kitten with
her curly coat was bred to a Persian cat and
the Selkirk Rex breed was developed by
introducing British Shorthair, Exotic and
American Shorthair blood.
