Left: A raised cast-iron
stove serves as a focal
point in the living room;
smart modern storage
blocks beneath the stove
hold firewood.

Facing page, bottom:
The open kitchen
exemplifies the Johnsons’
farmhouse-industrial style
with its high-contrast
palette of white-subway-
tile-clad walls; patterned
cement tile (from Clé
Tile) on the island; brass
and stainless-steel fixtures;
and custom, Amish-
made cabinet pulls.

Above: The long, narrow
dining room called for
a custom table. The
Johnsons designed this
sleek pill-shaped one
in collaboration with
the furniture-makers at
Denver-based New Collar
Goods and paired it with
Shaker-style chairs.

Speaking of surprises, let’s talk about
the five garage doors on the house
and workshop. Are they a nod to this
property’s roots?
MJ: That’s what caught our eye
about the original building here: It
had these beautiful garage doors
and the best light. Even though in the
end we had to tear it down, we were
determined to have some garage doors
[in the new buildings]. We love them
because you can open them up and sud-
denly have indoor-outdoor space,
but they’re also one of the cheapest
ways to do windows, and they have
an industrial feel.
