King of the proteas

HERE is a shot of Proteacynaroides,
flowering in our greenhouse. It started
to flower in early May and is still not
fully open.
This king protea has been the
national flower of South Africa since

  1. Proteas require a position in
full sun and a well-drained compost,

“My protea has been in fl ower since May”

because if the roots become
waterlogged they will die. They also
cannot tolerate phosphate in compost
or feeds; however, specialised feeds
for proteas are available. Follow these
simple rules, and you will be rewarded
with flowers like mine.

CAN I ask through your magazine why,
oh why, has BBC Scotland decided to
take Beechgrove off air until the end
of July? We are right in the middle of
the growing season, and we amateur
gardeners look to this programme for
their down-to-earth advice and tips.
I did contact them through social media,
but they declined to comment.
Evelyn Fordyce, Elgin, Moray

Wendy says:Yes, bad timing for busy
gardeners. The BBC cites budgeting
decisions and says: “We will be investing
in more content on social media.”

Beechgrove

garden off air

Brian has rooted the pinched out tops
of his sweet pea seedlings

I’VE been growing my sweet peas
for years, starting the seeds off before
Christmas, but have not really capitalised
on the part of replanting the bits I cut
off to make them grow sideshoots. But
I have discovered that these bits grow,
too. Wow! Now I have double the
number at no extra cost. Brilliant...
