Asiana Airlines [OZ/AAR] [South Korea] intends to add 34 new
aircraft to its fleet by 2023 – 19 A350s and 15 A321neos – as it phases
out its oldest models. In 2019, Asiana will take delivery of its first two
A321neos in 2H, and the A350-900 fleet will rise to 10.
Asiana Airlines added a Seoul Incheon – Ulan Baatar route, with
A330-300, from 09Jul19.
The carrier ended two routes from Seoul Incheon to Khabarovsk
and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on 08Jul19, both operated with A321s.

Avianca [AV/AVA] [Colombia] has signed interline agreements and is
in talks regarding codeshares with GOL (Brazil) and Azul (Brazil) to
address domestic demand in the Brazil.
Avianca Airlines is the new name of the airline and holding
company as it looks to distance itself from the troubles of Avianca
Holdings to shift focus from a growth model to one of profitability,
achieving optimisation of the fleet, strengthening its hub in Bogota
and reducing the company’s short-term debt level.
Avianca has received first its B789 N797AV (43983) under a sale/
leaseback agreement with SMBC.

Avianca Argentina [A0/MCJ] [Argentina] closed reservations beyond
01Aug19, adding to the rumours of an impending exit from the market
It has ceased scheduled flights for 90 days as it re-examines its
business model. The ATRs will be returned as larger aircraft are
brought in for regional flights. The carrier has amassed a debt of
US$30 million in the country since beginning operations.

Avianca Brasil [O6/ONE] [Brazil] has filed a request in court to try to
prevent the redistribution of slots that were in use at Congonhas,
Guarulhos and Santos Dumont airports.
Avianca Brasil has had its operations suspended by regulators until
the company proves operational capacity to maintain safe operations.
The carrier intended to lay off about 1,000 employees in June 2019
as part of its bankruptcy; its AOC has been withdrawn by the Brazilian
authorities.

AZAL Azerbaijan Airlines [J2/AHY] [Azerbaijan] clarifies that it has
only postponed its B737 MAX order for five years to 2024. Talks are
ongoing with the manufacturer.
The carrier will end Baku – New York flights in October 2019, as it
looks to revise its plans to attract tourists to Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan Airlines added new scheduled charters on the Baku –
Delhi route from 25Jun19, with B757-200. It plans to serve the Baku


  • Qassim route from 10 June to 02Sep19, with E190.


British Airways [BA/BAW] [UK] has deferred a ceremonial signing
with Boeing for the 18 B777-9s that BA parent IAG (UK) ordered earlier
in 2019, along with 24 options. The order is to help replace B777-200s.
The carrier may end up with six more used A380s, says Willie Walsh,
CEO of parent IAG (UK).
British Airways has extended the lease of an Air Belgium A340-300
until 31 October 2019, operating London Heathrow – Cairo route due
to the grounded B787-8.
British Airways will drop its London Heathrow – St. Petersburg
route from 03Oct19, as it is not commercially viable. Flights to Kiev will
also be dropped.
British Airways has converted order for two A320neos to three
A321neos.

Cathay Pacific [CX/CPA] [Hong Kong] has warned of “tremendous
pressure” on yields as there is declining travel demand in the market,
especially to and from its long-haul destinations.

Cebu Pacific [5J/CEB] [Philippines] has signed an MOU for 31 Airbus
aircraft, comprising 16 A330neos, 10 A321XLRs and five A320neos.

The current 737 MAX 9 schedule is listed until 04Nov19 inclusive.
Planned overall 737 MAX operation remains pending.


Alitalia [AZ/AZA] [Italy] will launch services from Milan Malpensa to
Moscow Sheremetyevo and St Petersburg in late July 2019 with A319s
and A320s.
Alitalia is world’s most punctual airline for the first five months of
2019 with 87% of flights on time, according to FlightStats.
Alitalia has expanded its codeshare partnership with AeroMexico,
covering various domestic routes to/from Mexico City. The codeshare
schedule, effective from 28May19, is:

American Airlines [AA/AAL] [US] and Southwest Airlines (US) will
have to defend their US$60 million deal resolving price-fixing claims
as an attorney who focuses on objecting to class action settlements
has appealed the result.
American Airlines CEO Doug Parker told employees that there
could be even more delays to the B737 MAX because of “politics,”
signalling that the FAA is increasingly worried about its reputation
following two fatal crashes.
American Airlines tentatively scheduled B737 MAX 8 routes from
04Sep19, as it was expecting the return to service of the grounded
aircraft.
American Airlines will acquire 50 A321XLR aircraft. The purchase
agreement includes the conversion of 30 of American’s existing
A321neo slots to A321XLRs and incremental orders for an additional
20 A321XLRs.
American Airlines will retire its last of 26 MD80s on 04Sep19. They
will then be ferried to Roswell, New Mexico.
American Airlines Group (US) and Qantas (Australia) are set to obtain
tentative approval from US regulators to operate a joint venture.
American Airlines is reviewing its network and may consider
reopening Chicago to Beijing and Shanghai.
American Airlines has announced three new routes from New York
JFK to Montego Bay, San Jose and Liberia in winter 2019/20, using
B737-800s.
The airline has launched new nonstop flights from Dallas DFW to
Dublin and to Munich. It launched new routes to San Pedro Sula and
Tegucigalpa from Dallas/Ft. Worth, with A319 in early June 2019; and
services to Santo Domingo from Dallas/Fort Worth and Charlotte on
08Jun19, with B737-800 and A320.
American Airlines has scheduled B737 MAX 8 services on its Miami



  • Bogota route from 18Dec19; once daily Miami – Medellin from
    04Sep19; and one of two Miami – St. Maarten services from 18Dec19.
    Planned 737 MAX 8 operation remains tenative, although resumption
    is listed as 19Aug19, Miami to Bridgetown (Barbados).
    American Airlines has gradually updated its Airbus A321neo
    schedules for the summer 2019 season, currently extended to
    03Sep19. Planned A321neo services between June and September
    2019 are as follows:

  • Los Angeles – Dallas/Ft. Worth: One-way flight on 24Aug19 and
    31Aug19

  • Los Angeles – Phoenix eff 06Jun19: 2-3 daily
