commitherselftoseriousstudy.

ForfiveyearssheworkedhardatThe

SurreyInstituteofArtandDesignat

Farnham,resultinginaBAHonoursin

FineArt.ThiswasfollowedbyanMAat

WimbledonSchoolofArtand,later,the

teachingofartattheMontessoriSchoolin

Oxford.

Sixyearsago,Joannaandherhusband

PetermovedintotheOldPostOfficeinthe

villageofSpeen.TheOldPostOfficeisa

lovelyoldbuildingwhich,thankstoitsnew

owners,nowboastsadelightfullyspacious

andairystudioinwhichJoannacreates

spectacularworksinmixedmedia.

ThepiecesJoannalovestoworkonare

large,colourful,abstractpaintingsbased,in

almosteverycase,onaspecificlandscape.

Shetakestimewitheachone,thinkingdeeply

abouttheeffectsheseeksandconcentrating

ARTS CULTURE

onhowtoportraythecolour,shapeand

senseofthescenebeforeher.Whatshe

producesiscertainlynotapainstakingly

accuratereproductionofthescene–thatcan

beperfectlymanagedwithacamera–butan

abstractpaintingwhichdeliversthesenseof

space,theatmosphere,thetimeofday,the

senseofscaleand,essentially,the“feel”of

beingintheplace.Theworkscommunicate

thissensationveryeffectively.

Whilsthermediumismainlyoilpaint,this

issupportedbyavarietyofothermaterials,

cloth,glue,tissuepaperetc.Butwhateveris

usedtheeffectisspectacular.Herlandscapes

canevokewater,sunshine,wind,rain,andthe

shapescanbecalmorworkintowildswirling

skirmishesofcolourandtexture.
