DEFINE A FLOOR PLAN

“You don’t need a fancy patio or deck

to create an oasis in your own yard—

just choose any outdoor nook,” says

Lambton. She recommends defining

the “floor plan” by anchoring the

seating area with a coffee table or

an all-weather area rug, then adding

a love seat and two chairs.

MAKE IT INVITING

“It only takes a few tweaks to

make an outside sitting spot feel

welcoming,” says Lambton. Her

easy ideas: Set up a café-style

vignette of snacks and drinks on a

cof fee table next to a vase of gar-

den blooms. Tip: Leave at least 18"

between the table and the edges of the

couch and chairs. It’s close enough for

guests to grab snacks, but far enough

to get in and out comfortably.

ADD A COZY GLOW

“Lighting is essential in any seating

area,” says Lambton. “ Not only does

it illuminate your space, it enhances

ambiance and offers an opportunity

for a subtle style statement.” The

Place coastal-inspired lanterns (like
