there was a young man fold-
ing his laundry. He was tall,
blond and wearing an all-white
tennis outfit. He apologized
for inter rupting us and said
that he worked at a local
manufactured -home company.
He looked straight at me and
said, “Don’t worry. You’ll get
the money you need.”
Suddenly, a wave of calm
passed over me, and I somehow
knew he was right. Neither my
mother nor I rememberedseeing him leave. He
seemed to have just van-
ished. But the peaceful feel-
ing remained.
We decided to go forward
with the auction and ended
up getting $11,000, which
paid the auctioneer his fee
exactly and left us the $10,000
we needed!
A few days later, Mom said,
“W hy don’t we ca ll on that
nice young man and see what
deals he has on manufactured
homes? ” We looked up theB
ack in the early 90s, my
mother and I faced a
sad task. The house our
family had lived in since 1939
was in great disrepair, and we
had neither the skills nor the
money to fix it. My daughter
was 5 years old at the time, and
we wanted her to have a nice
home to grow up in.
With this in mind, we made
the call to a real estate agent,
who was a trusted friend.
After looking over the house,
he said we would
never get a decent
price through a
traditional sale
and suggested
that we con-
sider auctioning
it instead. We
knew a gentle-
man in our church
who had an auction business,
so we contacted him. He said
that the house would have to
sell as an “absolute auction,”
which meant bidding started
at only $1. Needless to say, we
were worried about getting
enough money for a down
payment on a new home,
which we estimated would be
around $10,000.
