Woman’s World USA – August 05, 2019

(C. Jardin) #1
“What do you do when you’re not deliver-
ing chairs then, Pete?”
“I’m a carpenter,” I said. “You?”
“I make jewelry,” she answered. “My
own designs. Like this.” She touched the
pendent that hung from her neck.
“Beautiful!” I sighed, meeting her eye.
“Thank you,” she smiled, as a loaded
pause flooded the space between us.
“How about these folks? Who are they?”
I asked, hoping to break the silence.
“I don’t know most of them,” she admit-
ted. “I joined this group a few months ago,
and this is my first time volunteering.”
Marci looked at her clipboard and read
off some names.
“I know Carolina Martinez,” she said,
looking up at me with those beautiful

eyes. “She’s really good. Oh, and Willard
Henderson.” She tried to suppress a giggle.
“Willard...funny guy?” I smiled, as she
shook her head. “Your boyfriend?” I asked,
my mouth going dry at the prospect.
“No, no...not at all.” Marci lowered her
voice. “It’s just...he thinks he’s a better poet
than everyone, and he reads his poems so...
emphatically. He’s got a poem about rice...”
“Rice?” I laughed, incredulously.
“It’s as unique as it sounds,” she grinned.
Suddenly, someone started doing a
sound check on the mic, and Marci and I
slipped into seats in the last row.
The emcee introduced several readers,
but all I could think of was the woman
next to me, her delicate scent, her long
ring-less fingers so very close to my own.
I had half tuned out the introduction of
the next reader, but Marci’s light poke with
her elbow brought me to attention in time
to hear: “Willard Henderson!”
A man strutted to the mic as his voice
sounded, “The world is a bowl of rice...”
Like a pair of synchronized swimmers,
Marci and I lowered our heads, our shoul-
ders shaking as we laughed noiselessly.
After the reading, I walked Marci to her
car. She stopped at the door and looked at
me in one of those moments where every-
thing in the background becomes a blur.
“You never answered my question,” she
said, her eyes hopeful. “Are you a poet?”
“You be the judge,” I said. “I wrote this
tonight.” And then I recited:
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
I really would like
To go out with you.
Her answering smile was all the proof I
needed that I’d written the best poem ever.

Mystery

solution

The first mas-

seuse—the red-

haired woman

whom they dis-

missed because

her hands were too

soft and tiny—was

the one who stole

Enid’s bracelet.

Of all the possible

candidates, she was the only one who shook

hands with the ladies upon her arrival, which

allowed her to deftly unhook the closure,

slide off Enid’s bracelet, and hide it between

the brochures she was carrying. Upon being

confronted by Enid, the masseuse coughed

up the bracelet and was charged with theft.
