GURU PUJA SPECIAL EDITION

of Maya, even if one has the powers equivalent
to that of Brahma (the Creator) or Shiva (the
Destroyer).
It is because only the True Guru knows and can
bestow that secret formula, through which a being
gets to know the art of freeing himself from the trap
of Maya. The Guru gives him that 'powerful tool'
with the help of which he learns to be liberated
while being alive and living in this Maya-ridden
world only.
In regard to this tool or art, Saint Kabir presents
a remarkable analogy–
Har hai khaand ret mein bikhri
haathi chuni na jaaye;
Kahe Kabir Gur bhali bujhaai,
keeti hoye ke khaaye
Meaning, if sand and khaand (fine, powdered
sugar) are mixed together, then, an elephant cannot
separate the two with its trunk. However, the same
task can be easily done by an ant. Here, the trunk of
an elephant represents a gross tool, while an ant
symbolises a subtle tool. Saint Kabir says that this
Maya and mind of a person are finely mixed with
each other. The two cannot be separated through
gross methods (fasting, scripture-reading, etc.).
Only with the help of a subtle mechanism, i.e.
Brahm Gyan, one can bring his mind out of the
intense trap of Maya.
That's why the disciples, who become fortunate
to attain the refuge of such a Guru who blesses them
with this tool of Supreme Knowledge, they do not
hesitate from even pronouncing these words–
Ram tajun pae Guru na bisaarun;
Guru ke sam hari kun na nihaarun.
Hari ne janam diyo jag maahin;
Guru ne aavaagaman chhutaahin
That, I can forsake God, but not the Guru! In front of
the Guru, I won't even look at God... why? Because,
God sent me in this intense entanglement of the
Maya-ridden world; while the Guru saved me from

it and freed me from the painful circle of
birth and death. (Sahajobai, disciple of Sant
Charandas Ji)

GURU PUJA IN TRADITIONAL/
RITUALISTIC PARLANCE

This day holds a special place for the devotees
of the True Guru. They celebrate this pious day
wholeheartedly and with utmost devotion. As per
the ritualistic traditions, the disciples try waking up
even before the wee hours and timely finish the
routine housework of cleaning, washing, and
bathing. Then, they religiously practise sadhana
(meditation based on the science of Self-
Realisation) in the brahm muhurta (approx. 3am
to 6am). After that, depending on the availability of
resources, they cook fresh and pure food for
the Master. Thereafter, an asana (throne) is set up at
a clean place for the revered Gurudev, decorated
with flowers and garlands. Subsequently, after
placing the portrait (swaroopa) of the Master, the
earthen lamp is lit. Then, with heartfelt emotions in
the lotus feet of the holy Gurudev, aarti (the
devotional hymn) is sung. In the end, prostrating
at His holy feet, the cooked food is offered
devotedly. Accepting the offered food as Prasad,
they share it with everyone. Furthermore,
throughout the day, as and when the devotees
get the opportunity, they invest their time in
meditation and also join the celebrations at the
Guru's Ashram.
Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan extends its
heartfelt wishes of Guru Puja to all the devotees.
May this auspicious occasion mount you towards
the new heights of unswerving devotion and
undeterred meditation. Holy Wishes! ||
