minister would pave the
way for technocracy, a
form of governance where
experts in a particular field
lead the department related
to their education, skills
and stint.
Modi’s second term will
be about policy implemen-
tation and delivery.

BJP’s next target
The BJP has set its eyes on
Telangana and this was
quite evident with the
results in the Lok Sabha
polls in the state (‘Not in
the pink’, June 16). It was in-
teresting to note a Congress
leader telling your reporter
that even in constituencies
where the BJP candidates
did not campaign, lakhs of
votes were polled in their
favour.

With the Congress having
become a sinking ship in
Telangana, the BJP will
emerge as the only opposi-
tion party in the state to the
ruling Telangana Rashtra
Samithi.
Vyom Prakash,

Interesting letters
The letters to the editor
appearing in your maga-
zine are more interesting
than some of your columns.
The views of the readers are
mostly correct.
It is time regular col-
umnists of your magazine
understood that the readers
cannot be carried away by
their tricky style of writing
and jugglery of words. Let
them not make THE WEEK
their playground.
S.R. Gopinathan,
Palakkad, Kerala.

The apt minister
I could not spot the word ‘wonk’ in my dictionary. But,
I will take on M.K. Bhadrakumar for calling S. Jais-
hankar’s appointment as foreign minister an enigma
(‘Last Word’, June 16). There is nothing mysterious,
puzzling or ambiguous in the appointment. It was a
bit surprising, though. Perhaps, the prime minister
wanted the best man presently available for the job
considering India’s geopolitical compulsions.
As a diplomat and later as the foreign secretary,
Jaishankar played a crucial role in key negotiations
with the US and China. As the external affairs minister,
Jaishankar will have the required political clout to be
more assertive in strategic and foreign policy matters.
Also, I don’t think the prime minister is worried
about Rahul Gandhi being “ruthless against the
growing resistance movement in India to the corporate
process”. Rahul’s ‘chowkidar chor hai’ narrative was a
damp squib.
I believe Jaishankar will be of great help and advice
in Modi’s grand plan to prepare India for the free mar-
kets of corporate capital.
