WORD PLAY
When rain stopped play 35 overs into Pakistan’s innings against India in the ICC World Cup, the
battle was all but over. Pakistan needed 171 runs from 15 overs to win. When play resumed 40
minutes later, the revised target was 136 off 30 balls. What remained was garbage time, the
fi nal minutes of a game in which one side has an insurmountable lead, resulting in the players
slacking it off. Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-captain Sarfraz Ahmed was, perhaps, the fi rst to fore-
see that the match would go to garbage time. He was caught yawning behind the stumps even
as Indian batsmen were raining blows on the hapless Pakistan bowlers.
