others around the world in advocating
for an improved birth experience and
supporting birthing people in making
informed decisions that are best for
themselves and their family.
“Doulas do not play a medical role,
but they do provide emotional,
practical, physical and informative
support to those about to give birth,”
Laura says. “A doula [trained through
Doula Training Canada] is someone
who is non-judgmental and caring.
They help prepare pregnant people
for the journey ahead, ensuring their
needs are heard during such a
vulnerable and powerful moment.
The DSF has a group of 12 doulas
covering Belleville to Gananoque who
offer services for labour and birth,
postpartum and in cases of pregnancy
and infant loss to those who cannot
afford such services free of charge.”
To raise awareness about the value
of doula care and the funds to help
cover expenses that doulas incur
during their time with families, DSF
has some events coming up. First is
a Birth Story Contest that runs until
August 1, where you can submit your
own story to highlight the beauty,
uniqueness and experience of birth,
with the top 15 stories to be published.

information night at Go Green Baby
on Division Street welcomes anyone
who’d like to learn more about doulas

- The local chapter of Canadians for
Women in Afghanistan (C4W) is
pleased to announce its annual
fundraiser in April raised $20,000 to
continue the education of women and
girls in Afghanistan through the
purchase of mobile libraries, books and
the salaries for teachers in classrooms.
Speaker Dr. Lauryn Oates told the
audience of 158 guests that although it’s
a long road to agency in Afghanistan
— and there is serious concern raised
by the exodus of American military
forces, plus talks held between the
Taliban and government about the
continued rights of women — a strong
transformative power of educated
women and girls has been established.
C4W does make a difference.
