Dinner With Your Neighbour
At Kingston Community Health Centres
(KCHC), 22 community members gathered
for a potluck dinner in celebration of the
Dinner with Your Neighbour program.
Dinner with Your Neighbour is a meal-sharing exchange run
out of KCHC Immigrant Services that connects newcomer
and longer-term Kingstonians. The program launched in
December and began by recruiting interested community
members and providing cultural competency training for
participants. Through this program, eight groups were
matched together for meals. Once matched, a group hosted
a dinner in their home, and then attended a reciprocal dinner
at the home of their initial guests. Participants had the
opportunity to engage in intentional dialogue to learn more
about each other and the various cultures represented.
Everyone who participated in Dinner with Your Neighbour
expressed that they learned something new about another
culture. Often times, people also found that they had a lot
in common, whether it be that their children go to the same
school or a shared love of music or board games.
If you are interested in participating in the Dinner with Your Neighbour
program, contact Steve Kirby at [email protected] for more information.
“Food is a great conversation starter. We all have our
own specialities that we want to share with others. It’s
a good way to start a new friendship”
