he Kingston Yacht Club is
looking for anyone willing
to billet visiting competitive sailors
this summer, as it’s a season of
championship regattas hosted by
KYC. The “9 er” Canadian
Championships are August 2 to 4,
while Youth Championships run
August 12 to 16, and then there’s
CORK 2019, August 16 to 20. What
fun to host and get to know a talented
international competitor who is here
to race in a harbour with a world-
renowned August thermal breeze.

  • Tom Compton was a gift-of-life
donor, and when he died suddenly in
August 2013, his legacy became the
    Tom Compton Shoe Fund Annual
Memorial Run to raise funds for shoes

for kids. It’s something his four sisters
—Nora, Nancy, Mary and Colleen —
work hard on. With Runners’ Choice
and the Kingston Road Runners
Association as sponsors, Tom’s
passion to make sure all kids have the
right shoes lives on. This spring, 70
children participated in the run, which
Nora says, would make Tom smile
big-time! Tom was an avid cyclist and
runner who encouraged young people
any time he could. He quietly gave
pairs of shoes to many youngsters
over the years, and if you’d like to
help a child run to the best of his/her
ability, cheques can be dropped off
at Runners’ Choice, 56 Brock Street.
Or if you know of a young person
who needs a good pair of runners,
just drop in to the store. They will
help you out.

Chris Morris says he is amazed at
the amount of talent we have in
Kingston and the support that there is
for the music scene. “We really have
something special here!” Chris should
know, as he took on the festival
coordinator role at Homegrown Live
in May this year, when its 11th season
brought 135 performances to 15 stages
— around 500 musicians in total —
and $14,000 for the Joe Chithalen
Memorial Musical Instrument
Lending Library (Joe’s M.I.L.L.).
“I don’t think there was one specific
moment that stands out for me other
than the great feeling of seeing
musicians and instruments all over
the place, particularly around Market
Square.” Chris says. “I saw dozens of
musicians, who weren’t even playing,
enjoying the festival.”
He wants to thank the talented
production team that put the festival
together. “Not an easy job with venues
all over the downtown,” he says.
“Bon Evans helped with Instagram
and Twitter, plus he designed the map
of the venues. Tom Stewart is festival
founder and president of the non-
profit group running Homegrown.
Richard Burgman has been
production coordinator since the
beginning. Next year, we want to add
a classical/choral venue, the one genre
we haven’t touched yet. Otherwise,
we just hope to keep getting bigger
and better!” Chris can be reached at

  • Doula, the ancient Greek word for
    “servant,” historically describes a
    woman who supports others during
    pregnancy, giving birth and
afterwards. There is now a wealth
of evidence to support the value of
doula care, which has been shown to
    improve outcomes for the birthing
    person and baby.
    The Doula Support Foundation
    (DSF), a newly founded Kingston
    non-profit organization
    (www.doulasupport.org) co-founded
and chaired by Dr. Laura Pascoe, joins
