THE BUZZMAKERS

What makes you
laugh out loud?
My nine-year-old niece.
Her goofiness is the
purest form of fun.
Otherwise, I like humour
that’s droll and self-
deprecating. Hasan
Minajh makes me laugh,
especially all the older
characters he speaks
with who diss him. I also
like witty and absurd
humour like in The
Marvellous Mrs Maisel.

WHICH OF YOUR FILMS
IS THE CLOSEST TO
YOUR HEART?
UnLimited Girls will always
be special because I explored
my creative language in an
unlimited way. It was a film
replete with questions and
insights about feminism
that came from my own lived
experience and quest.
I wanted to explore
feminism’s histories, legacies,
and futures with respect
to love and desire, and the
contradictions involved in
living by certain policies
and philosophies.

WhenRam,thecreatorofPriya,askedmetowritethecomic
I said‘yes’inabout 30 seconds.Partly,it wasmycuriosityabout
working on a new thing, as I’d never written a comic before.
Priya’s Mirror is a story about the possibilities in the idea of
love, rather than power, to create change. What I loved about
working on a comic was that it allows you to talk about huge
ideas in an emotional way without sounding corny. It’s a powerful
combination of putting dramatic ideas and actions
in compressed frames.

What have you learnt
from your sex
education platform,
Agents of Ishq?
People share their sexual and
romantic experiences and
questions with incredible
frankness on the site. One of
our big learnings is that
heterosexual men don’t have a
place or way to talk about their
confusions and feelings. There
is also shame—either about sex
itself, or about not having sex
too. But most of all, Indians
really want to have honest,
open, non-judgemental
conversations about sex, love,
anddesire.

HOW DID YOUR COMIC BOOK, PRIYA’S MIRROR
COME ABOUT?

PAROMITA

VOHRA

A different perspective

Award-winning documentary filmmaker and
writer, Paromita Vohra, talks about her
favourite film, experience of writing a comic
book, her sex education platform, and more

Tell us about your
future projects.
An art installation called The
Love Latika is in the works. It will
be a room full of love-sex-poetry
that will play inside flowers
on a magic creeper. Also, I am
writing a book about living
alone, an animated video essay
on the history of marriage law.
