une proved to be a very busy
month for the crew at NXT as it
kicked off with a number of
international tech events such as
Apple’s WWDC, which often results in a
sleepless night after staying up to watch the
event’s live stream and drooling over the new
Mac Pro (which we’re featuring in Gear this
issue). I used to play this game of ‘up-
speccing’ where I head to Apple’s online store
and see just how expensive a single desktop
Mac could cost if you selected all the most
expensive options. It’s not yet available in
Singapore so we’ll play this game another
month.
Speaking of live streams, I remarked to the
new NXT Intern just the other day, while
watching a live stream of the latest SpaceX
Falcon Heavy launch, just how good she has it
these days. I mean, even just 5 years ago you
had to tune in to CNN to catch their coverage
of a rocket launch. Now its a multi-camera
live spectacular with live tracking and live
infographics! You not only see the rocket
launch, but there’s a camera to show second-
stage separation, and of course, there are
the landing platform cameras now to show
rocket boosters making their own automated
landings on a pillar of flames, with their
landing struts deployed.
Again speaking about streaming. According
to a recent Ericsson survey on mobility in
Singapore, about 75% of our monthly mobile
data consumption is from videos, and while
many watch videos on their smartphones,
there’s still a preference for streaming to
notebooks. In fact, modern notebooks can
easily handle not just 4K streaming, but
they now feature upgraded audio and visual
features such as HDR and Dolby Atmos. This is
why this month’s main feature, on page 50 is
on the latest notebooks.In this month’s Gear section we are also
featuring Ferrari’s 90th birthday present to
itself - a hybrid supercar called the SF
Stradale and we take a peak at Fujifilm’s
monster 100MP medium format camera
before playing with a Lego moon lander and a
DJI battlebot that shoots plastic BBs.Our Angel Zhi Min tries her hand at some iPad
doodling (she loved playing Angry Birds AR:
Isle of Pigs) and in NXT Insider we spoke to the
Director of IFA, the world’s biggest electonics
fair, about their CE China ventures. For Test
we try out Panasonic’s 46MP Lumix S1R full-
frame camera and Canon’s first ZINK instant
camera/printer hybrid. Plus, the NXT Guru
uncovers the biggest news from Computex
