BELA KUN’S

FA L L

BOLSHEVISM

REPUDIATED

REVOLT OF
WORKERS

From A. BEAUMONT. MILAN,
Monday.
Further details of the Hungarian
counter-revolutionary change
received from Budapest prove
that the downfall of the Bolshe-
viks was not caused so much by
terror of the Roumanian inva-
sion as by a general revulsion of
feeling on the part of the labour-
ing classes and the workmen
impressed into the service of the
Red Guards. These workmen
held meetings and demonstra-
tions as early as last Monday in
the outlying quarters of Buda-
pest, and came into conflict with
small groups of Red Guards who
still adhered to the Bela Kun
Government. The Bolshevik
leaders took alarm at the first
signs of wholesale defection,
and when they tried their old
methods of electrifying the
workmen and soldiers by fiery
speeches they were simply met
by an array of rifles which the
workmen began to point at
them.
On Monday evening the
Social Democratic parties,
seeing that the sentiment of
all Budapest was in their
favour for the overthrow of
the Bela Kun Government,
summoned big meetings,
and the workmen attended,
mostly armed and ready to
defend the counter-revolu-
tionary cause. An armed
conflict resulted in one or
two streets, during which
some rifle shots were fired
against groups of Red Guards
that resisted, and two men
were killed. The Bolshevik
leaders then thought of
recalling regiments at the
front to Budapest to save

their power, but when the
workmen-soldiers at the
front learned they were to be
taken back to fight against
the workmen-soldiers in
Budapest they revolted, and
Bela Kun and his “commis-
saries” narrowly escaped
being arrested by their own
men on Wednesday night.
The first to take flight from
Budapest was the terrorist Sza-
muely, who escaped in a motor-
car and reached the Austrian
frontier, where he was detected
and arrested. He carried with
him a sum of 300,000 crowns,
and is reported to have
attempted to commit suicide at
the moment of his arrest. On Fri-
day evening traces of Bela Kun
had vanished, and on Saturday
evening it was known that he
had succeeded in escaping from
the city in a motor-car, together
with two other Bolshevik lead-
ers, Landler and Vago. They
managed to enter Austrian terri-
tory, but, being discovered,
were arrested and the order was
given for them to be interned at
Rosenau. The new Government
evinced no desire for reprisals,
and the wives and children of
the former Bolshevik leaders
were allowed to leave Budapest
for Austria in a special train on
Saturday night under the pro-
tection of the Italian Military
Mission.
In fact, Colonel Romanelli,
chief of the Italian Mission,
has made himself very popu-
lar in Budapest by his con-
stant endeavours to avoid
bloodshed, saving the lives
of all threatened by popular
revenge, and at the same
time aiding by his wise coun-
sels in the establishment of
some more regular Govern-
ment and acting as a conven-
ient link between it and the
Paris Conference. It is due to
him also that the Military
Missions of the Entente at
Vienna were hourly and
exactly informed of the
trend of events during the
last two or three weeks in
Budapest, and, on the other
hand, the Paris Conference
placed implicit faith in his

suggestions, adopting them
without hesitation. Two of
these suggestions have had
an immensely beneficial
effect on the situation, one of
them being the suspension
of the Roumanian advance,
and the other that of remov-
ing the food blockade, which
has helped more than any-
thing else to strengthen the
hands of the new Govern-
ment at Budapest.
News comes from all the provin-
cial towns in Hungary that every
province has adhered unreserv-
edly to the new Government,
and in these circumstances
there is no longer any justifica-
tion for the existence of a sepa-
rate Government at Szegedin,
under the protection of the
Entente Powers.
[Since the above telegram was
written news has been received
of the arrival of Roumanian
troops in the suburbs of Buda-
pest.]

ROUMANIANS

AND
BUDAPEST

The precise situation in Buda-
pest is still in doubt. The
Supreme Council in Paris has
wired to the French Minister,
telling him to notify the Rouma-
nian commander that the
advance on the city must cease
at once. It is, however, not yet
clear whether the Roumanians
received this instruction before
they actually entered Budapest.
On the other hand, according to
the Budapest correspondent of
the United Press of America,
quoted by the Exchange Tele-
graph Company, 30,000 Rou-
manians have already entered
under General Marderescu,
who has appointed General Hol-
ban as commander of the city. It
is added that all Hungarian offic-
ers, soldiers, and policemen
have been disarmed. Similar
reports have reached Berlin. A
Reuter’s telegram from Copen-
hagen last night states that Rou-
manian troops are patrolling the
streets of Budapest.
