Rare sighting of
humpback whale
A humpback whale appeared off the
coast of Cornwall over the weekend, in
a sighting suggesting conservation
efforts are bearing fruit.
A group on a wildlife spotting tour
encountered it when it swam under
their boat, feeding on sand eels, around
eight miles (13km) from Penzance.
Hannah Jones, of Marine Discovery
Penzance, said: “We had spotted seals,
bluefin tuna, harbour porpoises and
minke whales, so it had been a
successful trip. But it was a clear day
and I noticed a change in the water. So
we motored over and we saw the whale
feeding. The mood on the boat was just
speechless awe.”
An endangered species, humpback
whales travel through UK waters when
migrating between North America and
the Caribbean. They have been spotted
around Scotland but visits are rare.
Ms Jones said: “The fact we are
seeing more could be proof that
conservation efforts have worked.”
