Cavendish in tribute to Belgian

Lambrecht after fatal crash

CYCLING

Mark Cavendish has led the
tributes to Belgian cyclist
Bjorg Lambrecht, who died
yesterday after crashing dur-
ing the third stage of the
Tour of Poland.
The 22-year-old was taken
to hospital by helicopter fol-
lowing the crash which hap-
pened around 60 miles from
the end of the stage between
Chorzow and Zabrze.
Isle of Man rider Caven-
dish, who was competing in
the race, tweeted: “Such an
incredibly sad day here in Po-
land and across the entire cy-
cling world.
“To the family, friends and
team-mates of @bjorg_lam-
brecht, all our thoughts and
sympathies are with you.
“Rest in peace. May your
star continue to shine as
brightly as it did in cycling.”

Without going into details
of the accident, which hap-
pened in treacherous condi-
tions due to rain, Lambrecht’s
Belgian team, Lotto-Soudal,
said on Twitter: “The biggest
tragedy possible that could
happen to the family, friends

and team-mates of Bjorg has
happened. Rest in peace.”
Race organisers said:
“There are no words to de-
scribe this tragedy. Bjorg
passed away following an
accident on today’s stage.
Our thoughts are with his
family, friends, team and the
whole cycling community.”

Lambrecht, racing in only
his second season as a top-
level professional, was
named the most promising
youngster in the Criterium
du Dauphine in June, having
finished second in the
Under-23 World Champion-
ships last year.
World champion Alejan-
dro Valverde said: “Deeply
sorry for the loss of Bjorg
Lambrecht, a cyclist who had
demonstrated a lot in a few
years. Deepest condolences
to family, friends and team.”
Bora-Hansgrohe’s Pascal
Ackermann, who won the
stage, said: “Today, the result
of the race doesn’t matter.
“I was devastated to hear
today’s tragic news and I
would like to personally send
my deepest condolences to
the family and friends of
Bjorg Lambrecht and every-
one at Lotto-Soudal.”
