Widow, 89, found

battered to death

after suspected

burglary at home

By Victoria Ward

POLICE last night arrested a 22-year-
old man on suspicion of murdering a
widow who was killed in a suspected
burglary at her home.
The body of Dorothy Woolmer, 89,
was found in her bed in Tottenham,
north London by a neighbour who had
gone to check on her around 10.45am
on Sunday.
The Metropolitan Police said the
pensioner, a keen gardener who had
lived at the terraced house with her
husband for around 70 years, had
“clearly been assaulted”.
They said they had not ruled out
burglary as a motive. The suspect was
last night taken into custody at a north
London police station.
Neighbours said there had been a se-
ries of break-ins in the area, one as re-
cently as two weeks ago. One said he
believed the suspects were targeting
elderly people who lived on their own.
Riot police armed with tasers,
shields and a battering ram raided a
property around the corner yesterday
afternoon. Two women and two young
girls were seen being brought out of
the property before it was searched.
Scotland Yard declined to comment
on the raid for “operational reasons”.
Mrs Woolmer is the 88th, and oldest,
murder victim in London this year. Her
immediate family last night appealed
for privacy at what they described as a
“very distressing time”. Neighbours

Police: children

born of rape

are not victims

By Gabriella Swerling
SociAL AFFAirS editor

CHILDREN born of rape do not count
as victims, police have said, after a
woman sought to prosecute her birth
father after he allegedly raped her
mother.
The woman, who wants her father
brought to justice in a victimless pros-
ecution using her DNA as evidence,
discovered the alleged rape in her
adoption records.
She has alleged that her mother was
under the age of consent when a family
friend raped her in the Seventies.
The daughter said her birth is proof
of a child rape and wants a DNA test
carried out to use as evidence. She now
sees herself as “a walking crime scene”.
However, police have said “the law
does not recognise her as a victim in
these circumstances”.
Appearing on the BBC’s Victoria Der-
byshire programme, the woman, who
cannot be identified for legal reasons,
said: “The records said she’d gone to ba-
bysit at his house and he raped her. It
says seven [times] that it was rape.”
The woman said: “I’m a walking
crime scene. Because of that crime, I
am alive. My whole life’s been dictated
by it – but no one will see me as a vic-
tim. I am living, breathing proof of a
child rapist and nobody is interested.”
She said she had confronted her fa-
ther about the allegation, which he nei-
ther confirmed nor denied.
Chief Supt Pete Henrick, of West
Midlands Police, said the force did not
underestimate the impact “no doubt
suffered” by the complainant.
He added that it had not received a
rape claim in the Seventies and the al-
leged victim had not wished to co-op-
erate when she was approached by her
daughter in 2014.
The Ministry of Justice has been
contacted for a comment.

Stalker on day release yards from woman’s home

By Daily Telegraph Reporter

A CONVICTED stalker is being de-
tained at a mental hospital in his vic-
tim’s neighbourhood and allowed out
on day releases in what charities call a
“farcical” situation.
Nikita-Jane Rogers, 25, of Leigh,
Greater Manchester, was terrorised by
her neighbour Christian Jones for
three months before he was arrested in
May, Wigan magistrates’ court heard.
Jones, 29, told his victim he would

stab her, rape her and threatened to
feed her three-year-old daughter to
sharks when she rejected his advances,
the court was told.
He pleaded guilty to harassment be-
fore magistrates on July 29 and was
given a suspended prison sentence. But
he was allowed to remain just 500 yards
from Ms Rogers’ home, at Atherleigh
Park Hospital, where he was sectioned
at an earlier hearing.
Jones was allowed out for up to three
hours a day. Ms Rogers said she was

frightened to leave home all the time
Jones remained on her “doorstep”. She
said: “I thought I’d be safe after he was
finally convicted – but he’s in a mental
hospital literally across the road.”
Anti-stalking charities criticised the
decision. “This is farcical,” said Jan
Berry, of Protection Against Stalking.
“This appears to make a mockery of
the promise to put victims at the centre
of the criminal justice system.”
The Department for Health declined
to comment.

Missing student murdered by church member

By Gabriella Swerling

A MIDWIFERY student was murdered
by a “cruel and cowardly” married
member of her orthodox church, a
court has ruled.
Joy Morgan, 20, has not been seen
since leaving the Israel United in Christ
Church in Ilford, east London, on Box-
ing Day.
Shohfah-El Israel, 40, of Crickle-
wood, north London, was sentenced
yesterday to life imprisonment with a

minimum term of 17 years for her mur-
der. The student’s body has never been
recovered.
Israel gave no reaction as he was con-
victed at Reading Crown Court.
Judge Michael Soole told him: “Only
you know the circumstances of your
terrible deed and why you did it,” and
accused him of a “cruel and cowardly
silence” about Ms Morgan’s final resting
place.
Israel lied to the police when he was
arrested, saying he had dropped Ms

Morgan off at her student accommoda-
tion in Hatfield on Dec 26.
However, he later admitted he had
spent two nights alone with her in his
Cricklewood flat, which was in defiance
of strict church rules. A signal from Ms
Morgan’s phone, which has never been
found, was detected in Israel’s car in the
Stevenage area on Dec 28.
The jury was not told about flirta-
tious exchanges Israel allegedly had
with other women before and after the
student went missing.

added: “It was his mother’s and father’s
